Steve,
In my real life, I am a Chief Technology Officer and VP/Engineering who has specialized in real-time systems and internet facing businesses for many years. While I can appreciate that a power outage could have wrecked systems which were not properly surge protected, isn't the Daily Racing Form operating from either a full data center or a third party hosting facility? The damage must have been far worse than reported at this point to have been off-line for a third consecutive day. Numerous databases will be behind the web interface including the historic database for programs, payment processing systems, news feeds, and much more. This is pointing to the lack of a disaster recovery plan having been in place with sufficient hardware to stage a hot-warm or hot-cold site backup. On the software side, it is possible that sufficient backups of web site source material were not taken or worse, have been, but have not been tested as part of an emergency services drill (kinda like the "M*A*S*H" episode where Major Burns says "M stands for Mobile")? Please let the DRF staff know that if they need help, I can work with them in this emergency situation. (*Disclaimer : This is not a sales pitch, but an offer should they need more hands and support.) Scott |
