I mean, they didn't even tell the guy they were doing it. Even if the dog had been that ill, he never got to say goodbye.
The ASPCA was, for years, in charge of oversight of the NYC carriage horses. Never mind that they were publicly on record as wanting them gone. So little of the money they raise actually goes to shelter animals and yet that's what all their ads imply it will go to.

You're better off going down to your local shelter, asking what they need (food, towels, blankets, etc.) and purchasing the items for them. I worked for a large statewide animal organization. The money seldom trickles down to the animals that need it.

That's really good advice. We adopted our pooch from a kill shelter that was run down, but holy cow, the people there really seemed to care about what they do and to try to give the best chance possible to as many animals as they could. Ours had been there five weeks when we met her.
