Everyone's favorite butcher
Is back in the game!
D. Ranged Lukas unleashed a pretty good looking 3yo colt at Oaklawn Park yesterday. The Cal Bred Flying First Class, off over five months, and having four consecutive bullets on his worktab, dismantled a MSW field and ran 6 furlongs in a VERY STRONG 1:09.92. Fairly decent looking 1st time starters, who all took money, for trainers Tim Ritchey, Steve Hobby, and John Servis ran 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. By comparison, an alw race for open 3yo colts later on in the card, won by 2/1 shot Front Court, was run in 1:11.73. Exactly 1.81 seconds slower and 25 Beyer points less. A statebred MCL race for older males on the same card, went in a painfully slow 1:14.82 Look for the Lukas trained Flying First Class to possibly get a Beyer speed figure in the 105-to-108 range. As always, I wish Flying First Class the best of luck---while a normal trainer might take a more cautious approach with such a prospect....we all know that this poor horsey is going to dance as many dances as possible. |

I watched that race and that horse looked much the best...
That Malibu Moon colt, "Vista Moon" looked nice too.

It was a 12 horse field, and though beaten 8 lengths by the Lukas horse, the Malibu Moon debuter for Tim Ritchey did have 6 1/2 lengths on the rest of the field. A $140K Dixie Union and a $135K Not for Love yearling ran 3rd and 4th. Beaten 14 1/2 and 16 lengths respectively.
It will be interesting to see what the Beyer comes back for the winner. It's been five years since a winner of an Oaklawn Park maiden race has run a triple digit Beyer. A horse named Medeglia D' Oro won by 4.25 lengths in an Oaklwan Park maiden race in Feb of '02. Getting his 6 furlongs in 1:10 4/5ths that day, and earning a 101 Beyer He was sold privately after that race....and was transferred from the barn of David Vance into Bobby Frankel's barn. He made his next start in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes---and was dismissed at an INSANE 8.5-to-1 odds---needless to say he won easily and ran a 107 Beyer. How on earth could a horse who had run the fastest figure in the race, and was going from Vance to Frankel, have paid $19.00!? |

I wouldn't call it a magical Derby formula....more like something that came to my crazed mind all of a sudden....and is based on only a four year sample. Like a whacky odd trend I'd say.
IMO, this is no Derby horse. This horse obviously has a massive amount of talent, and could be an excellent sprinter....possibly effective right up to a mile. I just have a feeling Lukas will badly mismanage this horse, and try to rush this horse on the Derby Trail. One of many examples would be the way Lukas managed Scrimshaw a few years ago. In his 2nd career start, Scrimshaw won a VERY strong alw race, I believe in 1:08 and change, on Santa Anita's opening day card (Ghostzapper was 4th as the odds-on favorite in that race) Schrimshaw, who could have been a very nice sprinter, was later rushed back off a 2 plus month layoff, in a desperate attempt to make the triple crown series, and won the Lexington Stakes two weeks before the Derby. Lukas ran him in all three triple crown races---and simply ruined him. |

I just think his philosophy has led to him ruining a real mind-boggling amount of very talented horses over the years. Many, I believe, could have really thrived under more careful handeling. |

I'm sure this horse is now officially on the derby trail
a few years ago I was working the saratoga sale and he kept coming back to look at my favorite yearling (who had also been my fav. foal, as he was out of my fav. mare ) it was pretty much a given that he was going to buy the horse...and he did, we were all (the employees that is, I have no clue what the owner thought) disappointed that he got him...and that colt was thrown to the wolves on the derby trail last year...when he had neither the seasoning nor perhaps, the talent to compete at that level.... not realy relevant I know... anyway, I'm not a big fan of D. Wayne.

Lucas TC Nominated Maiden Earns 107 Beyer!
This was mentioned in the "Southwest " thread. However, I feel it merits it's own thread. Flying First Class, an eight-length maiden winner at six furlongs in race 6 Monday, earned a Beyer Figure of 107. He is trained by Wayne Lukas. His only other start was a place at Turfway in September.

I expect him to be fast-tracked to the TC trail now.

Bet against him forever, if he isn't gutted now, he will be. Horses that run that fast that early end up tailing off pretty bad, from what I have seen
