press release:
Fair Grounds Cancels Final 4 Races Of Mardi Gras Card NEW ORLEANS, La. (February 20, 2007) – Fair Grounds Race Course canceled the final four races of its Mardi Gras Day card Tuesday after a fire broke out in the men’s restroom on the east end of the second floor of the grandstand. Upon arriving on the scene, New Orleans Fire Department officials requested that the six-story, 217,000-square-foot grandstand/clubhouse facility be evacuated, which led track officials to cancel the remainder of the card. A crowd of 2,657 was on hand, in addition to approximately 400 employees. Fire department officials received the alarm at 3:05 p.m., or three minutes before post time of the sixth race, according to Fifth District Chief Jaime Lampard. Shortly after the sixth race, the building was evacuated. There were no injuries, and the damage was contained to the restroom. Fair Grounds has no live racing until Friday, when officials expect to race as scheduled. The $75,000 Mardi Gras Stakes, the scheduled feature event of the afternoon, has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 26. For customers at Fair Grounds and simulcast outlets, all wagers on the final four races are refunds. Consolation Pick 3 wagers were paid on tickets that were still alive and ending on the seventh and eighth races. Tickets that correctly selected the first two legs of the Pick 6 received a consolation payoff. The $7,149 carryover in the Pick 6 for Tuesday remains for Friday’s program. Fair Grounds Race Course, the nation’s third-oldest Thoroughbred racing facility, has been in operation since 1872. Located in New Orleans, Fair Grounds is owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ Global Select Market: CHDN) and also operates off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana. Fair Grounds’ 135th season, the first live racing in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina, continues through March 25, 2007, and is headlined by the 94th running of the $600,000 Grade II Louisiana Derby on March 10, 2007. Information about Fair Grounds can be found on the Internet at www.fairgroundsracecourse.com. |
