Default 2/23: Gulfstream ($125k Carry)

Wild doings at Hallandale Thursday as KMc puts over a 60-1 lawn firster sending the Gulfstream P6 pool into a 4th day and up to $125,000. Although the budget P6 play and $48 P4 fell short, a rather lucky $25 late P3 cover ticket helped make the day OK when English Channel combined with 15-1 and 8-1 late double winners for a $486 ($1) mutuel.

P6 Friday is equally tricky, but has an interesting harmony. Three dirt sprints (6f, 6.5f, 6f) and three 8.5f turf tests make up the sextet, making sense to use wider multiples in the grass races and narrow on the main. In the recent mile and sixteenth grass races at GP, note that outside posts did well: #12-#3-#8-#11 and #10-#12-#9-#6. Early-Presser types have been most effective, with deep closers snaring the bottom wrung(s) of the tri or super.

On the main, be aware that speed is not holding nearly as well as it had for nearly a month... Pace-pressers and stalkers are swooping to the lead at various stages in the stretch and winning...

Interesting note on Baron Von Tap. He is cross entered in the Tampa Bay BC (150k) on Saturday.

TAM morning line guy has him at 12-1 (take any of the M/L's there with a massive grain of salt).

Good luck today Steve.

I am VERY surprised you didn't at least mention Salinja. Watch the replay from his last race. He is a stone cold single for me today, at probable short odds

I can understand you getting behind him.. I thought he was one of any number here capable.. A very difficult group. All pace and trip. Certainly Johnny V. helps his cause, but there looks like 7 here with an opportunity to win. Let's see what scratches do to the card...

Nothing Tesher likes better than scratching. He is out of his mind to scratch from this spot for the Tampa race tomorrow, which not only has more speed, but is an utterly impossible spot for him.

If he couldn't win his last he wasn't winning today but this was far and away the better spot.

Beaming may well win but he has a MAJOR caution sign on his back.

Look at the entire scenerio.....Jimmy Jerkens runs him for $60K in his debut, knowing full well he's a talented horse, as the horse is bet off the board, which means he knows the horse has a major hole in him. The horse runs a winning race, but gets a terrible trip, and gets claimed. He rightfully returns in a maiden special where he runs even more impressively, performing in a manner that probably wins 90% of those races, and yet is immediately back in for a tag. Yes, I understand full well if he wins this race, and gets claimed, the owner makes $25-30K, but this horse showed last out that he can easily win a maiden special, and perform well in conditional allowances, after which he can certainly win restricted claiming races. He could have really been an earner....yet they can't wait to get rid of him.

Oh, he may well win today, but I say invest heavily on him at your own risk.

I can't remember the rule of thumb, when they are on the hedge does it favor speed or closers?

I agree, but maybe the purse/claim/already money earned is enough to get rid of a potential problem

Yes, but that problem makes him a terrible bet at his likely odds-on offering.

I prefer to handicap and leave the hedge/rail concerns to those who are trying to " out-handicap " me.

That would be my geometric guess since the turns are sharper. Like Delta Downs.
