HOY Dayjur?

This ill fated colt was a great prospect with amazing pedigree but I don't recall Dayjur being named HOY. What he a HOY in a foreign country?

He was horse of the year in England as a three year old. Also champion three year old that same year in UK and France. The fact that he was a turf sprinter probably put BTW and Pedigree Ann into a tizzy. I guess he should have won the Breeders Cup except for leaping shadows in the stretch.

Thanks CS. I knew he was a champ but I didn't know he was a HOY. I remember a member of his first crop being named "Jump the Shadow."

Don't know why you would say that. Dayjur was out of Eclipse winning sprinting filly Gold Beauty and was so good at short distances that he was never tried longer. The way a horse is trained makes a difference, you know - only one example, Orientate was an effective miler, but he was trained as a sprinter for his championship campaign.

You once made a quote that "6 furlongs is a cheap speed distance that is not worthy of a million dollar race". Therefore I assumed that you would be not in favor of a HOY that was only raced in sprints.

Brits choose their champions for each of several distance divisions. Then there is the Cartier trophy, which usually goes to the horse who was most dominant in its division - they have bred for distance specialists for many decades now. Up until 10 years ago, we held out for the all-rounders- the Foregos, Ack Acks, and Cigars, horses who could sprint with the sprinters and stay with the stayers.

But then they chose Ouija Board last year, when her form was demonstrably inferior to that of Pride among the older mares. So the Cartier Horse of the Year trophy seems more a popularity contest than a measure of racing merit.
