Default Huge show payoffs in yesterday's Bay Meadows 2nd

Looks like someone loaded up on Tough Game to show in yesterday's 2nd race at Bay Meadows. He was the 4/5 favorite, and ran out of the $$ in a five horse field......with one of the five horses deciding to stay in the gate.

The winner went off at 6-1 and paid $17.80 to show.

The 2nd place finisher went off at 3-1 and paid $17.80 to show.

The 3rd place finisher paid $22.00 to show.

LOL!

I feel sorry for whoever it was.

He/she had to be feeling pretty good when the 5th horse stayed in the gate, and only four raced.

Tough loss in a tough game!

Hope there was some water below that bridge. Tough way to make 5 % interest. Although it would have been paid out in 1 day.

I know that if I had been playing that race, I would have completely missed what was happening in the show pool, made a W/P wager on the horse that finished 3rd, and only after the race noticed that the show wager on him paid $22.

They got exactly what they deserved. That is not what playing the horses is about.

laundrying drug money ?

There was someone that put $5k on a 5yr old 1st time starter. Te gate opened and he just stood there and looked at it. The poor thing had to be led out of the gate.

I think because it was Bay Meadows the show prices weren't all hat huge. I've seen over $60 to show. I just remember it was a DWL horse that ran out. I saw 4 horses and didn't waste my time looking at it.

I think the guy that pointed out the show pools actually did bet the winner to place and lost $20

TOUGH GAME ran yesterday???? When he is healthy...he is a fast sun of a gun. But he is a bit on the fragile side I believe.

There is nothing chicken about it. Its very gutsy. You can lose a bundle of money. Scares the crap out of this guy personally, I would never take that risk on an animal as flighty as a thoroughbred. Its a desperation bet. Someone needs some cash fast.

When Dubai Escapade ran out in the Princess Rooney (?), the prices were astronomical as well.

Just reflecting, I didn't see the show pool, but it may not have taken an incredibly large wager to produce those show payouts.

All it took was for there to be little show action on the other horses. Perhaps.

That's pretty hilarious. It's not enough to beat the game. You have to beat it in a macho way.

That was my thought as well. I don't really understand the idea that one bet is chicken......and another one is cool.
I don't typically bet to show myself. But if someone likes to take the risk of loading up on a show bet in a short field......that seems every bit as legitimate - and every bit as risky in terms of odds vs. reward - as any other bet.

It goes further than that, miraja. I'm quite certain that in certain easily identifiable circumstances, loading up on a heavy fav in the show pool is among the best bets one can ever hope to make in this (or any) game.

My thought normally is that if the favorite is healthy.....and has racing luck......the favorite should win or place.

Bad luck, or something amiss, and the favorite is out of the $$.

Sort of like "all" or "nothing."

Hence, instead of loading up on show, I'd be more likely to play a lesser amount to win and/or place.......or perhaps some exacta/quinella combos as a backup.
