Default Hartlage: High Heels a Derby Candidate

Gary Hartlage, popular Churchill-Oaklawn circuit trainer known as "Red Dog", speculated on "At the Races and Beyond" Monday that he is considering a start in Derby 133 with his Fantasy (Gr.II) winning filly HIGH HEELS.

maybe it's not such a bad idea considering all the talk about how similar the Oaklawn and Churchill tracks are.

Why do those other two fillies matter if they're not running in the Derby?

It would be the 19 other COLTS I'd be worried about. LOL

Before spouting off about the West Coast girls...

1. She's actually faster off this race than Rags to Riches.

2. Magnificience needs to do her thing around two turns.

And she's got a 10 race foundation under her, unlike many colts rushing at the Derby. Not the craziest notion to swing for the fences... He nominated her for the TC last year for a reason.

Hartlage/Johnson have a hard enough time winning bottom level claiming races, much less the Kentucky Derby. This is insanity.

Hey maybe it's her owners first and last chance. Many before them have ran horses with a whole lot less chance so why not them? People on here act like they wouldn't get Derby fever when many on here are going crazy over a Mid level claimer racing way over her head in a race at Keeneland on Wed. I'm just saying if they'll let her in the gate and she was maybe my only chance at ever starting a horse in the Derby then load her up I'd say to the starter crew.

There is nothing wrong with the Oaks. I would love to see a filly in the Derby though.

She'll be lucky to run in the money for the Oaks, much less finish in the top 15 of the Derby. They're out of their freakin' minds if they run this horse in the Derby off of a gift pace scenario in the Fantasy.

No, he stated with Steve it was a 95.

I was making dinner and spit out my Diet Coke when I heard him say something about "not ruling out the Derby yet...."

I guess she's a better fit for the Derby than Going Wild back in 2005....

That's what I thought I heard too... had a mouthful of pasta at the time. (Nope, it didn't end up on the screen... nothing surprises me anymore.)

And for heavens sake... switch to regular coke... diet is AWFUL for your health.

I know I know. But I've adjusted to the taste of diet. The real stuff tastes like syrup at this point.

I have no problem with people saying a filly shouldn't run in the Derby. But at least if u are going to say that, u should also say that at least 10 of the males that will be in there shouldn't be there either. That 95 she earned put her in the same area as 90% of the male contenders. If she can run a 95 and shouldn't be there, neither should Nobiz, who's yet to crack 98 in his career.
