Bring on the debate!! Hahaha!

Finger Lakes to me, is either Central or Western, NY.

Albany/Adirondacks north (you could get away with Utica), Upstate.
Syracuse, Central.
Roch/Buffalo, Western.
Binghampton/Elmira/Catskills, Southern.

This is an debate that can go on and on.

I just started saying I am from VT, since I am closer to VT then any place that gets thrown at you when you say you are from NY or Upstate, NY.

"Oh Saratoga/Lake George, that's near Niagara Falls right? Oh it is not? Oh so near the City are you?."

Man I wish my sister was on DT arguing about upstate NY. She went to Ithaca College and Rochester U an always referred to those two places as upstate NY. I can see Rochester as upstate NY because if you go any further north you would be swimming in Lake Ontario.

I'm originally from Albany, now live on Long Island.

In my mind "upstate" is anything North of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Guess it is all relative. My folks in Binghamton always point out, if they were any further "down" they would be in PA.

This is a terrible definition.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upstate_New_York

What the REAL (MY) definition is:

Long Island: Nassau, Suffolk counties
New York City: New York, Queens, Kings, Richmond, Bronx counties
Hudson Region: Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Putnam counties
Catskills: Delaware, Greene, Sullivan, Ulster, Columbia counties
Capital District: Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Washington counties
Northern/Adirondacks: Warren, Essex, Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton, Fulton, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Jefferson counties
Central: Montgomery, Schoharie, Otsego, Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Chenango, Broome, Tioga, Cortland, Onandaga, Oswego counties
Finger Lakes: Cayuga, Wayne, Tompkins, Chemung, Schuyler, Yates, Seneca, Ontario, Stuben counties
Western: Monroe, Livingston, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Allegany, Niagara, Erie, Cattaragus, Chatauqua counties

To me Rochester is Western.

If you say Rochester is Upstate and not Western, what would you call Canton or Thousand Islands? Artic New York?

I agree with your statement, excpet for Washington County. Washington borders VT and if far north of Albany, and is very rural, labeling it with Albany, Rensselaer, Schnectady and Saratoga make it seem more urban. Let's be honest, Washington County's cow population is larger then the human population, even if you doubled the human popluation.

See above. Canton = St. Lawrence County, right? "Northern/Adirondacks"

Oh, I know. I got a flat tire there once and the hillbilly that changed it for me was like a NASCAR pit guy. But it's a big county, doesn't really fit the Adirondacks, so it gets put with Saratoga/Capital. The Albany newspaper gets delivered there, I'm guessing? Sniper?

Let's be honest... much of Saratoga County is rural as well.

Post Star out of Glens Falls (Warren County) is the main paper of Washington County. If anything it fits with Warren County.

I grew up and still work in Washington County.

Since I live "upstate" (Delaware county in the Catskills), it seems to me and my friends that live in the Big Apple, that anything north of Westchester is "upstate". Get on the New York Thruway and once you get past Suffern, you'll see it. Actually, you can't miss it.
I hope this helps.

Believe it or not, my Juinor High/Senior High School had Vermont students that came to New York for schooling.

So giving it to Vermont would be a fair agreement.
