![]() Nafzger talked about how little weight Street Sense lost post-Derby, something like 20 lbs. I assume this is good and considering how much horses weigh it sure seems low to me. Anyway can anybody talk about weight loss following major efforts and in particular what this amount of weight loss says about Street Sense? Do you expect a realist Preakness contender to gain weight over their Derby run or can they take a little hit, go in lighter, and still do it with their previous effort's flare?

![]() Chuck can address this better than I, but a horse can lose upwards of 70 pounds in a race. And actually, Street Sense's herbalist told Steve Haskin Sunday that the colt lost only 10# in the Derby. Horses can also lose more weight after a big effort by going off their feed.

![]() I should clarify this as the 70# is a number that doesn't accurately define what a horse can lose just running a race, but rather total weight loss in a day.. A 10# weight loss from running a race isn't necessarily 'stunningly low'..

![]() Without stepping on a scale I have no idea how someone can determine if a horse lost 10 or 20 lbs in a race. I have heard a wide variety of numbers but remember that most horses lose a lot of water weight before they even get to the paddock if they are on Lasix.
