Anyone else care to stab at it? |

![]() From the DRF....Curlin, whose final time of 1:53.46 was the fastest in Preakness history, returned $8.80 as the second choice in a field of nine 3-year-olds. The track was labeled fast despite the fact the race was run in a light rain, which began less than an hour before post time.

![]() Flasy Bull and Hesanoldsalt ran 1:47 4/5ths----I settled on 1:54 1/5ths because it's basically an interchange final time with the older male race.
In fact, Curlin and SS each ran about five lengths faster than Flashy Bull. Although, some figure makers, CJ among them, have long believed that races at 9.5 furlongs at Pimlico always come back faster than they should. That's why both Invasor's Pimlico Special and Bernardini's Preakness figures were both shaved 5 points by Beyer last year, a few days after being originally posted. |

![]() Think of that stumble out of the gate. He could have owned the record.

![]() The DRF time was 153 and 2 for Secretariat.
Curlin is a monster. When a horse gets passed and then passes back and sets a stakes record -- that my friends, is a performance for the ages. After a stumble out of the gate. |

![]() Said Curlin wouldn't hit the top ten in the Derby. Waffled about Curlin in the Preakness.
Curlin ties Preakness record after a stumble and a shoddy ride. What's Andy got to say? |

![]() I normally disagree with Beyer, but I have agreed with his assessment of Curlin in both the Derby and Preakness.
Thus, I have been wrong twice also. And to think that I saw his career debut in person...... |

![]() Andy is a great handicapper who has a great opinion much of the time.
He was right to take the position he did, and bet against a horse he picked in the KY Derby. He just wasn't able to produce the right horse to beat him with--or the right betting startegy on this occasion. Take nothing away from Curlin and SS--but the track was supersonic fast--he ran five lengths better than Flashy Bull did the race before....and, if you believe that 9.5 furlong races at Pimlico come back faster than 9f races--as more than one respected figure makers do---Curlin and SS were only two or three lengths faster than Flashy Bull. It was obviously not an otherwordly performance for the ages....the fact that C. P. West was 4th, beaten about 4 or so lengths off memory...that underlines that point. C. P. West has never run a figure faster than 92 in his life, and he's elidigle for N1X allowance races...not having won a race since his August debut at 6 furlongs. |
