Quarters v. Thoroughbreds
So, I'm out in Utah, not exactly a hotbed of racing, but I recently discovered that Wyoming Downs (in Evanston, WY) is getting set to start live racing in about a month. What do you think the odds are of the DRF having PPs for these races?
Anyway, many of their races from 400-800 yards are open to both Quarters and Thorobreds (sp?). Any insight on how to handicap these? Do quarters have an inherent advantage at these short sprint distances? I'm also not exactly a quarterhorse racing expert, so any other insights on that front would be much appreciated. |

The 800 yard distance is usually 870 at the track I frequent where QH take on thoroughbreds. And I think the track condition makes a difference. If the track is deep, I would go with the thoroughbreds. It also depends on how sharp the turn is. Anything less than 870 I would think its advantage QH. |

Thanks for the tips. You were right about the 870 yards. Here is their stakes schedule, hoping to make it out there for a good number of these days, they only run two days a week and have bands, chili cookoffs, etc. If anyone else on here is in UT or WY shoot me a PM and let's see if we can meet up.

I'm farily sure you'll find DRF pp's available.
I've been to a few far off the beaten path tracks and pp's have been available. You might try emailing or calling DRF or Equibase to find out more info .... |

Good luck! For the 870 races, if you play a quarter horse on top of any exotic bet, you MUST, put a tb for 2nd and 3rd. If they don't win in an 870 race, they pretty much always make it close at the end, the quarters usually get the jump on them. I normally mix it up in an 870 race, Overall, I kind of like the quarter horses a little bit more than the tb's. not sure why, though. I guess I like them getting the jump on the tb's. Another thing, a quarter horse should be able to beat any tb in a straigt race that's 400 yards or less. |

Qtrs vs T-Breds. I live is So cal and have been to Los Al numerous times. I dont play the qtrs but have heard alot of angles. The one that made sense was that if they have qtrs and t-breds running at 870 distances only play the T-Bred if he is a closer. A t-bred who tries to run head up with a qtr early in a race will get shredded. Many 870 races have Q-horses who are regulars at 350-400 yds distances, thus that is why you dont want a T-Bred racing early with a Qtr in an 870 race. |
