Default Sports Town Euthanized

SPORTS TOWN, a 3yo son of Belong to Me that won the May 16 Ogygian Stakes and placed in the Whirlaway, was reportedly euthanized earlier this week due to complications from laminitis. Owned by the Gatsas Family's Soveriegn Stables and trained by John Terranova, Sports Town had a 3-0-2 record from 6 career starts with earnings of $104,007.

Out of the Peteski mare Answer to Me, Sports Town was bred by Sabine Stable and sold for $150,000 at the Ocala Spring sale as a 2 year old.

Our sympathies to the Gatsas family and everyone at Sovereign on the loss of this nice colt...

Very sad. I guess this is why he scratched from the Woody Stephens even though he likely would have been a top 2 choice.

he ran hard so he got laminitis?? that's one i haven't heard before.

my condolences to his owners, trainer, groom, everyone who was involved with him.
hopefully they will soon find an answer for this disease. too many horses are lost to this, including some of the very best that have ever graced a racetrack.

That sucks for sure. I thought he really had a bright future sprinting. His Ogygian win was simply monstrous. RIP.

RIP Sports Town.
This thread got me thinking about something I've been dealing with for a while.
It has to do with "hope" in a tough tough game.
I've booked my mares to stallions I've picked. Waited eleven months.
Paid all the fees, stud, vets, Jockey Club, farm, on and on... believe me, it's not the money. A lot has to do with the "hope".
Watching the foal stand on it's wobbly legs and take its first sip, listening to its mommy scream for it when its weaned. When its tacked up and ground broke, lunged, ridden with a pony on a lead, then on its own, well, it's really part of a tough tough game.
I'm just trying to put a face on all the effort that goes into a horse before it even gets to the track. It's more than money. It's love.
So, to all the folks that had their hands on Sports Town, the breeder, the groom, the friend that brought a carrot or a mint, the mucker, the hotwalker, the trainers and riders, and all the others whose lives have been touched by the hope they had in you, Sports Town, thanks. May you rest in peace, and be assured that the love they've put your way won't be forgotten, nor will the hope you inspired in them. It's a tough tough game.
RIP

RIP Sports Town.

This is a devistating disease that has taken down so many of our horses. I don't think we will ever really understand a horse's foot.

This is an interesting but complicated website discussing it.

Perhaps, Steve, you could get Dr Allday to give a simple explanation (if there is one) to the audience when he calls into the show.
