Although I gotta admit, I was surprised when it came on and the cover guy was named Laffit Pincay. |

I'd have to say it was the best coverage I've seen from ABC, CBS or NBC. Using people from HRTV was a good move in my opinion and I thought the segment on the history of Thoroughbred Racing in America was really neat and something different from having Pletcher thrown down our throats (sorry ESPN, but we KNOW he is wonderful, do you have to keep reminding us?)
Now if only Strike A Deal had won.... |

i had cbs on in the background while i was on xpressbet. Worst camera angle of the day had to be the start of the ccao. why show the start, live from behind the gate? maybe a replay.

I thought they did a good job... it's refreshing seeing a different take on racing. Not that ESPN is bad by any stretch, it's just unique seeing different perspectives on covering the sport.

CBS did credible job
CBS coverage at Colonial Downs was very good. I am not regular viewer of HRTV; however, I know that Laffitt Pincay and Millie Ball do good work there. Caton Bredar and Jay Privman are very professional and have worked for other broadcast entities.
Technical difficulty will race call was minor glitch. Dave Rodman is one of the best race callers, period. He was super in his tenure at Louisiana Downs and does great work on Maryland circuit, Laurel & Pimlico. Plus, he has Colonial gig now. ESPN does great job. Although I think they should include Kenny Mayne in every broadcast. Randy Moss, Jeannine Edwards and Jerry Bailey did fine job yesterday. ESPN called "audible" last week to cover Coaching Club American Oaks in lieu of Del Mar opening Saturday. Rags to Riches' scratch from race did lower viewer (and my personal) interest. Comments about earlier postings here -- 1) thread is CBS coverage -- so ESPN & CCOA comments are off topic 2) Millie Ball is pregnant -- cracks about "fat chick" are tasteless LINE OF THE DAY from Laffitt Pincay (as best I can recall his words) -- "If I was only 6 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter, I have the pedigree" in reference to working as jockey. Remember, he is THE Laffitt Pincay's son!

I liked it. As said, there will always be some kinks to work out -- live broacast, multiple locals, etc. I think Pincay has a very good future, and as long as he doesn't fall into the "trying to hard" category, he's going a very good job.
Live racing, for the general public, non-fan, etc. is not an easy product to position or sell -- considering that the approach taken is very wrong, LOL. Eric |

I thought it was terrible, and the Colonial announcer wasn't real tip-top either (and if I'm not mistaken, he's usually one of the better ones, right?). First he called Duveen 22 lengths behind when anyone could tell it wasn't even close to 22 lengths (if I'm wrong, sue me), and then said that the leader needed another furlong and a half when they were well past the 3/16 pole.
Not impressed with the announcer or ANY of the telecast crew, less Jay Privman. |

People might not remember but CBS used to be the only one years ago that did racing. You had people like Jack Whittaker and Haywood Hale Breun with his colorful jackets and Ray Haight called the races.

but i have been accused in the past of being old fashioned. i saw a younger girl who was about 7 months along...wearing her regular jeans still, just unbuttoned/unzipped--and i know this because she was wearing a t-shirt that probably was snug when she was not yet in the family way, and it wouldn't cover her belly, which was hanging out for all to see. shirt kept rolling up--but she kept tugging it back down. reminded me of baby huey in the cartoons.

I just went back and watched their coverage again. It was horrific. Besides the prego lady in the paddock, what about the fat lady with Laffit? Not one person in the coverage had a somewhat normal name as well. I hate watching Hank, especially in HD; but they made him look somewhat tolerable.
