THACKERVILLE, Okla. (AP) - About 100 people were arrested today when authorities raided a horse racing operation suspected of running illegal races just north of the Oklahoma-Texas border. Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission executive director Constantin Rieger the organizers were holding "match races" on a straightaway generally featuring two horses against each other. Rieger says Jesse Romero of Thackerville faces charges of illegal gambling and illegal operation of a racetrack. Authorities believe Romero was living on the property where the races were held and was the primary operator. Rieger says others found to be involved in the races could face charges of operating an illegal horse racing operation, gambling, racketeering and money laundering. Authorities say more than 400 people who were at the track were processed to determine whether they were involved or merely spectators. More than $100,000 in cash and about 100 horses were seized during the raid. |
