Default Can someone tell me..

why does Channing Hill get all those mounts when her record is so bad? Seems like there would be alot of options besides her. Must have a good agent, or be good looking, or something.

What's up with that???

Channing Hill is a man, baby (sorry for the Austin Powers reference, but I couldn't resist).
Robfla beat me to it!

How many races can you be expected to win when in such a deep jockey colony you never get better than the 6th or 7th best horse in each race you ride. If you put him on some of the rocketships that Johnny V., Garret, Cornelio, and Edgar et al ride every day you would see his statistics improve accordingly. The same goes for Chantal Sutherland's statistics by the way.

I don't know if the stats are there but it seems that the turf is actually a place that Hill does okay. There was a horse over the weekend where he had a nice ride for a late move win.

Having said that I wish there was a stat for "strength of horse" that a jock rides. It is tough to get a handle on those jocks that are getting the most from the mounts they are given as opposed to a name jock who is just sucking but gets the talent based on past performances or agent relations....

YOUBET offers stats for value but it is a little tough to follow sometimes...

I agree totally. That colony is so so deep. He was probably better off spending his summer at the Jersey shore than up in Saratoga. Then in the fall he could go back to Belmont in the afternoon and ride at the Meadowlands at night.

Channing Hill has built up a nice clientele over the time he's been here in NY. He gets the mounts he gets, even during the Spa meet, primarily because he works very hard, follows instructions (and knows when it's time to abandon them as well), listens, communicates, and is reliable and dependent in that you can get him back, and back again, and again, and so on. This jock is out every single morning, getting on as many horses as he can. He's also a very nice guy. Channing is more than competent and the stats don't tell the story (check out the % of horses he rides that are 10-1+, 15-1+ and 20-1+) -- and no he doesn't get bad horses, poorly spotted horses, etc. because he is a bad jock.

Also, going to Monmouth vs. coming to the Spa is a decision that has everything to do with Belmont. His agent (who is a very sharp guy and a very nice guy) is lining up his Belmont meet NOW during the Spa meet. He's already picked out horses he can get on, sees where certain horses will be placed, etc. You can't do that from Monmouth. If he's at Monmouth, he can't do anything but make some calls (no pun intended) and he can show up to Belmont on day one with an empty condition book. On this side of the game, like others, it's never as easy as it appears.

Pletcher, Levine, Clemente and Dutrow Jr. all have horses at Monmouth. I understand what you are saying Eric, but if you could win a few races for these guys at Monmouth then maybe you could get a few mounts for them at Belmont. Coa rode at Monmouth a couple of summers and then he made the move and look at him now. I think Garcia rode there too. i just think that the kid has ridden enough in NY where the trainers know what he can do. But the colony is so deep that you could always have a guy like Bejerano or Borel to ride your horse. I think it would be better for him to ride more in Jersey where he has a chance to ride live horses and get in to the winners circle more often. I would think that trainers would notice if he did well in Monmouth.

There might not be a right or wrong to the decision. Coa was in a completely different place in his career and was trying to accomplish something different as well.

Also, it's not about winning races for those guys at Monmouth and getting a few mounts from them back at Belmont. That's not really the way it works. I mean, it can, but it's not mounts you are looking for -- it's live mounts, shots, something live. Being at the Spa now he can get on those horses now for the trainers who have those horses and are racing them now, working them, etc. He might make more money at Monmouth -- but personally, I think he ends up with a better Belmont meet by being at the Spa now. Same with Garcia. He and his agent were on the fence between Monmouth and the Spa and his agent (who is very sharp) decided to have Garcia pay his dues, lay the groundwork, etc. and head to the Spa. Coincidentally -- a two win day for Garcia today.

Like I said, no right or wrong, and I am not Ron Anderson, LOL.

Eric
