Default How do these guys have jobs?

In watching this weekend's games, I have to ask myself how some of these participants remain employed in the NFL. My list with comments:

Norv Turner:

what is his claim to fame? That he was successful in calling plays for one of the most talented offenses in NFL history? How hard would it be to call plays when your QB, TB, FB, TE, WR and half of your line will all one day be in the hall of fame? And what has he done since? Complete failure in Washington. Complete failure in Oakland. and for this, he gets rewarded with guiding a team that was 14-2 last year.

where are they now? 1-2 and have looked extremely flat for better parts of all 3 games. Way to go Norv. Lets make Ladanian look like Cedric Benson and lets make the defense look like they should be in Cincinatti. This team is too talented NOT to recover and at least make the playoffs in that weak division. But contenders? No way...not with Norv at the helm.

Rex Grossman:

How does he still have a job? Yes, he has a great arm. Yes, at times he can make exceptional plays. But how can you not give him the hook especially after what he did last night? He is wildly inaccurate and his decisions are just terrible.

Find a custodian to play QB and play defense and field position. This guy does nothing but lose you games.

Dick Jauron:

How does this guy have a job? He has ONE winning season and that was pretty much a lucky team that got on a roll. Other than that, his teams have been really bad. Where are the bills again this season?

John Kitna:

you invest tons of money and early draft picks to assemble a tandem of receivers that are prototypes for what NFL receivers will be ten years from now. And you get John Kitna to throw to them? 36-46 lifetime record as a starter John Kitna? anyone can put up stats...but can you win with this guy? History says NO.

I am sure I can think of more. These are the ones that are in my head right now.

Throw Turner's bro on there also. Couldn't call a game if the bears were playing my high school team

norv turner is exactly what the san diego management deserves for how they completely mishandled the marty schottenheimer deal. like one of the guys on espn said (or was it fox sports?)--they fired a guy because he 'can't win in the playoffs' for a guy who can't win in the regular season.
he may be a good off coordinator, but he's no head coach!!

Kitna/Grossman:
NFL coaches do screw up but almost invariably the best QB n the team plays. If Griese or Orton were better than Grossman, one of them would be be playing right now.

As for Kitna, he's not the greatest but you can't expect the guy to be able to run-block or rush the ball. If you bet the Lions yesterday (as I did) you had to be willing to be blinded by their 2-0 start vs lousy teams and not count against them the fact they rushed for about 50 yards vs Minnesota.

Detroit ran for about 40 yards at Philadelphia and that was the end of that. If you can't run the ball on the road vs a decent or better team, chances are you are going to get killed as they did.

Turner/Jauron:
I think you're correct, at least as far as in-game coaching goes. But I think in-game coaching is probably undervalued when teams hire and these guys are probably very good all-around coaches. How many real good game coaches are there these days? Buff got stomped by NE which is no surprise really and SD hasn't run the ball well all year and got picked apart late by Favre.

How about Marvin Lewis. He signs criminal after criminal and has one winning season. He was a defensive coordinator and as head coach his defenses are always awful. He has one of the most talented teams in football and has never won a playoff game. I know that he has brought this team up a level, but that talent should have accomplished more.

I know this is a football conversation, but how Isaiah Thomas is still employed by an NBA team is beyond me. He must have naked pictures of James Dolan with a goat or something. A bad coach and even a worse GM, it is just blows my mind.

Norv turner offensive coordinator, thats it, if you want to call it that. Phillips and LT are fighting it out.

I'll take back what I said earlier about Grossman. I think people need to watch the games though. Not spout some crap that they think they know something about scouting with some numbers used, when I feel they didn't see the game (Yes, I truly believe this). Especially the SD and Dallas games again. The entire offense and players are not working. I'm sure they think that they are. Muhammed and Berrien are not finishing routes, and the offensive line is not working. Could this mean that Grossman just doesn't work? Maybe. But that was a horrible scene to watch in the 4th quarter last night.

Dick Jauron: You don't win in this league by being conservative. PERIOD!

As for Kitna, he's working. For Martz at least!!! I think Sullivan and Orlovsky will provide in the future, but they still have to do some tinkering with the offensive line, plus provide a healthy back. Kevin Jones was a top 10 last year before the fracture.

Ive always been fair about Grossman. He is a wonderful talent...I bet you havent heard THAT in a long time. The truth is he has ALL of the tools. He has an arm to throw any route. Im not a bears fan by any stretch but ive watched all three of his games this year in their entirety. The blame can be spread. For instance, why does Ron Turner have him throwing outs when its clear he throws best across the middle? Why do they put him in predictable passing situations? Why is there no speed out of the backfield to compliment the power of Benson?

The receivers are quitting on the routes because they don't have the confidence that Rex will deliver the ball where and when it is supposed to be delivered. It is as simple as that.

He needs to watch film, develop better chemistry with his receivers and he needs to sit on the bench for a few games and get his head straight. Right now, he and everyone else are sitting and waiting for him implode every time he trots out there. He needs to regroup. At this point, he needs to lose his job for a while.

Ive often wondered the same thing myself. Although, this year he actually made a couple of decent moves. The talent in the frontline cant be argued with.

Marvin Lewis doesn't sign players, Mike Brown does. Lewis just coaches them. I'm not sure if Lewis is solely responsible for player personnel decisions on that team. It he is, then yeah I guess.
