RP.....
British runners bid for further Maktoum Challenge glory by Jason Ford KANDIDATE and Jack Sullivan, who between them have won the last three runnings of the second leg of the Maktoum Challenge, will bid to get British trainers in the winning mood when they return for Thursday's feature at the Dubai Carnival. Although Irish trainers enjoyed adouble last week, three meetings at the 2008 carnival have yielded not a single winner for Britain. Kandidate's trainer Clive Brittain is hoping for a repeat of last year's all-the-way win in the 1m1f dirt highlight. “He's got a lot of air miles on the clock now and we know that whenever he travels abroad he will run up to a certain mark,” said Brittain. “Dubai suits him – he's used to it there now. He's won there the past two years and we're looking for the hat-trick now. “The plan is to get him invited to run in the Dubai World Cup again but it obviously depends on his performance in the Maktoum Challenge. We hope to take our chance, but the carnival is getting tougher each year.” ERA..... Brittain’s DWC Kandidate reappears 08:46 - 05 February 2008 Respected British trainer Clive Brittain, who has a fine record in the UAE, unleashes Carnival regular and Dubai World Cup hope Kandidate at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday. The globe-trotting six-year-old will seek to take the route he took into the Dubai World Cup last year, when he triumphed in Round two of the Maktoum Challenge – the showpiece race on Thursday’s card, sponsored by Shadwell Farm. On that occasion the son of Kabool displayed a front running masterclass to romp home and take the Group 2 honours 5 ¾ lengths ahead of Mullins Bay, and Brittain would love to witness a repeat this time out. "We hope to be able to emulate what he did last year," said the Newmarket-based handler. "The plan is to get him invited to run in the Dubai World Cup again but it obviously depends on his performance in the Maktoum Challenge. We hope to take our chance, but realize the Carnival is getting tougher each year. "We felt that in last year's World Cup when he broke he stumbled and that hampered him from the off. I'm not saying that he would have won but he would have been a lot closer to the fourth placed horse Vermilion." Kandidate finished the race, won by Invasor, in sixth. Outlining Kandidate's smooth preparation at Nad Al Sheba this time around Brittain added: "He's settled in very well in Dubai. His weight is good and he's been eating very well, so everything looks as though it's going to plan.” Kandidate is one of the most experienced horses in Carnival history, having competed in the past three editions. The 73-year-old Brittain added: "He's got a lot of air miles on the clock now and we know that whenever he travels abroad he will run up to a certain mark. "Dubai suits him, he's used to it there now. He's won there the past two years and we're looking for the hat-trick now.” The veteran trainer also hopes to be double handed in Friday’s feature, the UAE 1000 Guineas for which he has Albabilia and Love Of Dubai. The latter was sixth in a conditions race behind Godolphin’s Fiesta Lady on the first night of the Carnival, while Albabilia won the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes on The Curragh. Brittain explains: “It was very wet when they arrived so Love Of Dubai probably needed that run quite badly. Albabilia is a lovely filly and the plan is to run both at the moment.” 07 February 2008 Nad Al Sheba Racecourse Post Time: 19:15 6 21:55 SH MAKTOUM BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE R2 [TB, 1800M(a9F), Dirt] Date Horse Owner Trainer Jockey Time 08-02-07 KANDIDATE (GB) The Exors of the .. Kandidate "in good shape" for Super Thursday challenge Kandidate: impressed in preparation for crack at Group 2 glory on Super Thursday by Racing Post staff CLIVE BRITTAIN'S Kandidate worked well under Ryan Moore on Saturday morning in preparation for his crack at the third round of the Maktoum Challenge, the Group 2 highlight of this week's Super Thursday, run over 1m2f on the dirt. Winner of round two last year, he was runner-up in that race this year and Brittain is pleased with his six-year-old: “He is in good shape and he thrives in Dubai. It was a good run last time but obviously he (Lucky Find) will be hard to beat again. “Kandidate is much better than he showed in the World Cup last year and has won over further so stamina is not an issue.” Mike De Kock's Lucky Find also worked and the South African trainer said: “He went well and we are very pleased with him. He has won over this trip at home (on turf) and we will decide between the World Cup and Godolphin Mile for him after Thursday.” Argentina's Latency will also opposethem on Thursday and looked in good shape. Mick Channon's Majestic Roi is on target for the Group 2 Jebel Hatta, over 1m1f on turf and was seen cantering gently on the dirt. De Kock's Honour Devil, under Johnny Murtagh, and stablemate Royal Vintage, first and second in the UAE 2,000 Guineas, both worked separately and will reoppose in the 1m1f Al Bastakiya, a race won last year by Asiatic Boy. He will run in the 1m Burj Nahaar ahead of his crack at the World Cup. John Oxx's Mourilyan will runin the 1m4f City of Gold and worked on grass under Mick Kinane. |

KANDIDATE SET FOR MORE HONOURS
By Tom Peacock, PA Sport Kandidate could have earned more money in the Dubai World Cup - but almost certainly less of the glory than he enjoyed by taking the intercasino.co.uk Magnolia Stakes at rainy Kempton Park. But after the six-year-old had clung on to the 10-furlong Listed event as one of three on the card for Neil Callan, trainer Clive Brittain was still positive he would have made an impact in the world's richest race that same afternoon. Kandidate (9-4) was not able to pay for his World Cup entry fee, having unseated his rider in a prep-race at Nad Al Sheba three weeks ago. Although he reaped handsome dividends at the Sunbury venue, he had his fair share of luck to get the verdict by a head as it looked to the naked eye as if the fast-finishing Illustrious Blue had caught him. "It costs 60 grand to enter the World Cup and if he'd won his last race, he would have gone there," explained Brittain. "This is a great consolation but I still think he could have run a big race as behind the first three, the World Cup looked stacked up and there's good place money. "Plans are fluid now. First I'm going to have a drink." The course record was smashed by the winner but the much-vaunted return of Diamond Tycoon proved a disappointment as the 15-8 favourite was last. Callan was handed a one-day ban (April 12) though for causing interference. It was Callan again who took the intercasino.co.uk Rosebery Stakes on Philatelist, who was smashed into 5-2 favourite after his luckless 10th in the Winter Derby. The colt has been campaigned in the typically studious manner of trainer Michael Jarvis and hit the front with plenty of time to prove half a length too good for the game Mr Aviator. "I'm not saying he would have won the Winter Derby but he got messed about on the first turn and got no run when he needed it," said Jarvis. "He might have a break now and wait for the better ground. We might look at Royal Ascot." Jean-Pierre Guillambert was suspended four days (April 12-15) for causing interference on Bahar Shumaal. Ralph Beckett was also thinking of the Royal Meeting for Red Rumour (12-1), who received the full force of Seb Sanders to collar Elna Bright virtually on the lollipop in the intercasino.co.uk Handicap to win by a nose. "We had a feeling he might be slightly better than he shows at home," said Beckett. "We ran him over a mile to see if he got the trip as I think he could be the sort of horse for the Britannia." The same team's Asaint Needs Brass led home a six-way finish of juvenile debutants in the intercasino.co.uk EBF Maiden Stakes. Appropriately, the 15-8 favourite's name is an anagram of Sebastian Sanders. David Evans' Vhujon (16-1) obliged on his three-year-old debut by slipping up the inside rail in the Play Blackjack At intercasino.co.uk Handicap, while the likeable Edge Closer (2-1) was another to continue winning ways in the intercasino.co.uk Conditions Stakes. Callan brought up his hat-trick aboard Calculating (100-30) for Mark Usher in the once-prestigious intercasino.co.uk Queen's Prize.
