I could be wrong, but i just don't see breeders rushing to use Discreet Cat.

Although Echo Of Light wasn't top class on the racetrack and probably could be classed as an under achiever. Being a son of Dubai Millennium, he is sure to get his admirers at stud, especially as they cannot really justify a big fee for his first season. I could see him getting quite a nice book in his first year.

He certainly wasn't afraid of anything as a yearling. I remember seeing him at Kildangan shortly after he had been bought by the Sheikh for 1.2million (or something like that). A group of use walked past and he stuck his head out and nearly knocked a girl flying. He craved attention that day.

Discreet Cat was arguably the best horse on the planet in 2006. shame he couldnt do anything this year... I hope he enjoys his retirement, and is a success at stud..

Invasor?
George Washington?
Ouija Board?
Deep Impact?

Sorry to say, but i'd put all of those in front of Discreet Cat on their form of 2006.

arguably being the key word here... there was quite a debate last year at the international handicappers conference last year as who was the best.

True, but that will probably be higher than he is worth. I can't help but think he is such a weak individual. Sometimes you just look at him and you think a gust of wind would blow him over. I think breeders would be concerned about that physical weakness being past on to his progeny. I could be wrong, but that would certainly be in the back of my mind if i was contemplating sending a mare to him.

I doubt that Darley really wanted him to be retired this year. So it must have been the only option, which makes you wonder what might actually be wrong with him. Surely in the best of worlds they wouldn't want him having to compete with the likes of Street Sense and Hard Spun.

I was never a huge Bernardini fan, but you can add him to that list as well. Heck, how much better was Discreet Cat than even Henny Hughes last year?

You left off PRIDE.

That said, I hate to compare them..... Discreet Cat was brilliant (too).

Hope he has a happy retirement.

Oh, I'm more than happy to.

Of the four listed, and the one you added -- he undoubtedly ends up in a tight race with GW for 4th place on the list of five.

The horse ran a couple of huge races, everyone went ape$hit, and then he got his ass handed to him all year.

Pretty simple stuff.

Not being funny, but was he, though?

His UAE Derby win wasn't exactly brilliant. Okay, he beat Invasor, who was unfit and half the horse he turned out to be, hence why he was allowed to go off at 16/1. What else did he beat?

He only managed to win two graded races after then (only one at Grade one level) when he was 1-20 and 1-4 favourite.

I will admit, he looked very good when winning the Cigar Mile.

But does his form give him the right to be called "brilliant"? Not in my opinion.

No Chance, Ill agree with you that the guys you mentioned had better seasons than DCat last year, but on ratings, DCat is well up there with the class of 2006. His Cigar Mile win when as a 3yo he gave Silver Wagon 4pounds and Badge of Silver 7pounds and a beating in a super quick time was one of the performances of the year. That alone puts him right up with Invasor and Deep Impact when considering who the best horse of 2006 was..
