Thursday, December 27, 2007 8:31 AM EST
The Associated Press

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. (AP)

"You can imprison a man, but not an idea. You can exile a man, but not an idea. You can kill a man, but not an idea."
Benazir Bhutto, while Prime Minister

It really seemed to be a matter of time.
She even said something to this affect.

Is it effect or affect? Effect is the noun
gunner so I guess... I dont know
Affect is the verb gunner... I dont know.

Affect...yes...

She even said something indicating
she would probably die.

Yeah, she's the female Pakastani Tupac.

Either that or she's just another corrupt third world ass hat who got what she had coming.

Until someone can produce her lyrics on par with......

"as long as I stay black, I gotta stay strapped & I never get to lay back.
'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs.
Some buck that I roughed up way back... comin' back after all these years.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat. That's just the way it is."

I'll go with the latter.

Very sad news. These fair democratic elections they're planning are obviously a long way off.

she had been suspected of corruption, i believe that was what caused her to be the 'former' prime minister to begin with.
the bombing didn't kill her, i just read that she was shot twice, in the neck and chest, and then the shooter detonated a bomb, killing himself and 20 others.
of course you have to take a look at musharaf, who will try to hold onto power at any cost--he is saying islamic extremists, but what else would he say??

an already volatile region will be that much more so after this. more are already dead due to violence after the assassination...

it's a shame tho that political differences can cost you your life. she should never have gone back, she had to have known this was a very real threat to her life to return to pakistan.

Virtually any information out of places like Pakistian is shady at best, complete lies at worst. Americans must realize that as biased and flawed as our own media is, that most of what we hear as the general public about places like this and people like her is b.s.

I do know that if she was the enemy of people who blow themselves up then she probably was closer to friend than foe.

i doubt she could be worse than ol pervez, who certainly seems to know how to work our current administration.
i hope they're able to figure out who was behind it. a damn shame tho.

The General is more helpful than anyone else in that region. I believe there are far worse alternatives than him, especially considering that they have nukes.

You won't see anything informative on CNN, Fox or the networks, that's for sure. All you'll get is the two word sound-byte, "islamic extremists," uttered by politicians and analysts. Try BBC or The Jerusalem Post if you care to actually learn about that part of the world.

Funny, how when this kind of violence was going on in Ireland for decades, it was always political. Things haven't changed too much.

As an aside, Haliburton held up well in yesterday's sell-off. Imagine that.

I think its naive to see this as anything other than a political assassination.
even if it turns out that it was actually carried out by "extremists", al qaida, etc. It happened with the tacit approval of Musharraf who made sure there was no security for Bhutto.

The election should go on imo, Musharraf would be routed. But everyone is advising that it would be too chaotic to hold the election. don't let the thugs win.

I liked The Clash.

Seems to me she chose to be a martyr.
The security was bad. She was told not
to go to many places and she did anyway.

I bet Cheney is telling GW this will stabilize things.

From all I hear, she was a decent sort...it's a sad thing. Of course a number of "regular" folks have died in the protests since her murder and we hear little if anything about them...loss of life should always be mourned. Least we fall victim to the concept that this only happens "over there", the names Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Bobby and John Kennedy...even Larry Flynt and George Wallace should be mentioned. Hatred is a universal concept and something so minor as a different skin color, religion, nationality or political point of view sparks the ugliest of human behavior. American politics has recently once again taken a turn toward demonization of individuals instead of debate of differences...I pray we don't have such a travesty here!
