![]() From Racing Post.....
Sanders referred to BHA over whip offences by Bruce Jackson SEB SANDERS, Britain's joint-champion jockey, was referred to the BHA for passing the trigger point of 24 days' suspension in the last year for whip offences after failing by a head to win a maiden at Lingfield on Saturday and incurring the wrath of the local stewards. They found Sanders guilty of excessive use of his whip and not giving his mount time to respond in the 1m2f Come Jumping Here on January 21st Maiden Stakes. However, there was no suggestion that this was another case of a top jockey wanting to clear his slate for the turf season with a referral hanging over his head, like Eddie Ahern and his recent much-criticised use of the whip at Southwell. Stipendiary steward Terence Brennan, on duty at Lingfield on Saturday, said: "You can't put this case in the Eddie Ahern category. Sanders has just broken the rules in using his whip 14 times in the last one and a half furlongs and a couple of times in quick succession without giving his horse time to respond." Sanders, upset to have been found in breach, said: "I'm disappointed but I'm not going to change the way I ride. “When you have ridden in so many races in a year and been involved in so many close finishes, it is something that is going to catch up on you as sometimes you are going to cross the stewards' path. "I have never been referred before. I am planning to continue riding on the all-weather. I want to get my fitness levels up for the start of the turf and I hope I do not get a long suspension." Sanders had spoken earlier in the week about not letting the threat of a referral for his accumulated whip offences in his titanic battle for the jockeys' title with Jamie Spencer affect his riding. * * * * It's about time this bully was referred to the BHA for his ugly riding style. Time after time he got away with 'battering' a horse almost into submission when he only had a small chance of winning the race. This is the reason I did not want him to win the jockeys title last year. He constantly broke the rules with whip offences and won the title, what does this tell the younger jockeys coming up through the ranks? The piece I have bolded says it all really. He has broken the rules, but he is still upset to have been referred? We need to crack down on over use of the whip. A couple of years ago he rode a horse of my father's and he came back with marks all over him. He is not the only person who keeps re offending, but in my eyes he is certainly the worst and he should know better.

Neither are good role models for the younger jockeys in my opinion. Lets hope a proper, straight talking, honest jockey can win the title this coming season. RYAN MOORE
