claim - tomorrow
I think there is a lot of people in this board with great insights, so I would appreciate if somebody can give me an opinion about a horse that I am planning to claim tomorrow...(here in Brazil)...it's more difficult to compare, since you i think you don't follow brazilian racing...but anyway...
His name is Bringback My Bunny. He is by Boatman and Jay Bella (by Negroni) I've talked to my trainer and the horse is sound...no visible problem. I'll watch him at the paddock tomoroow, too. I think he is better between a mile and 10f...but he is running at 10f to 12f more frequently. He is better on the turf i think...but he can handle the dirt sometimes. Here is the link for his past performances (last 4 races and last victory). He is entered in race 8 (he is #4) http://www.jockeysp.com.br/sms/arquivos/RTCJ030208.doc And here is the link for his last start on the dirt and his last start on the turf: Dirt - 12f: http://www.jockeysp.com.br/resultado...=JC08314012008 See race number 6 (he is #2 and got 4th place) Turf - 9f: http://www.jockeysp.com.br/resultado...=JC04614102007 See race number 10 (he is #5 and got 4th place) Of course there are better races...not only those 2 i've posted...he is a 4yo horse and has 1 win, 4 seconds (including one listed race), 3 thirds, 4 fourths and 5 times unplaced, in 17 starts...he weights 500 kg. Thank you! |

You realize you have to feed this animal that has won one race in 17 starts? Horse has some turf ability(and should have got a 2nd in the race you posted video for.)I see ability, but not enough desire. The name is great, but for me to want a horse, they have to be more interested in winning than that.If you want an example of a horse with desire, then check the video of a 3 year old filly called ONEFUNSONOFAGUN. That's what you need .Find a horse with that desire that she has.Don't settle for less. She has tried hard in every race. Her worst race (on paper) is (to me) her most impressive of all.On 10-18-07 race 2 Oaktree...Talamo allows her to run as fast as she wants(the only time I have seen this work for him is on Bushwacker.) She goes too fast, and Trevor says she is "swamped" by the other horses. O.K.? How badly are most horses gunna get beat now? A lot, right? Not her.She battles the whole way in.She thinks she got 2nd(she came 4th by barely losing photo for 2nd to 2 others.) She has not thrown in the towel once.In 5 races,She has 3 wins,a 2nd,and a close 4th.She has been tired in 3 races, but ran hard all the way to the wire in those 3 races.

What is that called here? A scratch? BTW,I think a horse like this(ONEFUNSONOFAGUN) can move up in class. She is very aggressive. She has a lot of fire, and wants to release it on her opponents. It means they are having trouble getting her far enough off the lead.See,she needs a trip like she got HOL 11/15/2007 race 3.Most horses, you don't want to have to wait, etc., but this one would be helped if she got covered up.Unlike most horses, she will fire whether she has to wait or not.Right now she is making a big middle move. They are trying to hold her back, but you can tell she is very eager to pass these horses up front. Then she is holding on with determination, but it would be better if they can move her later. She would actually be better off facing horses that are faster earlier.Right now, only 2 or 3 are in front of her.Be better if 4 or 5 are quicker than her. Then she might be forced to wait before she unloads. She isn't going to be deterred from unleashing a bid. |

Sorry about that...the right word is scratched, as you said.
You're right when you say that a horse must have a winning attitude...but, sometimes, a horse is running with horses thar are simply too good for him...and no matter how big is his desire to win, he won't be able to deal with them...it's a matter of genetics. Moreover....a filly with 3 wins in 5 starts costs how much?? Does her owner want to sell her? It's impossible to find a horse with this race record for sale at a good price...and horses with not that good race record can have a winning attitude when they face opponents of his category...he doesn't need to win to show a winning attitude....sometimes he can fight hard for a 4th place...against classier horses... That's what I think...You'll (maybe) never find a horse for claim for $2,000 with 3 wins in 5 starts and with a winning attitude...But you can search for a horse that has a winning attitude (that's extremely important, I agree with you) and is simply facing horses far better than him...and you claim him and put him in a weaker race. |

She has 4 wins in 6 starts and was champion 2yo filly...Now, as a 3yo, she continues with excellent performances 1st start - 1.000m (dirt) - Won in 59.58s. - a regular race 2nd start (stakes race - fillies criterium) - 1.400m (dirt) - Won in 82.94s. - 3 and 1/2 lenghts Named Champion 2yo 3rd start (stakes race - grade 3) - 1.500m (dirt) - Won in 89.04s. (0.66s short from the track record) - 2 leghts 4th start (stakes race - listed) - 1.500m (dirt) - Second place beaten by 1/4 lenght on 90.56s...and battling until the end 5th start (stakes race - grade 2) - 2.000m (dirt) - 7th place - time: 124.7s. 6th start (stakes race - grade 3) - 1.600m (dirt) - Won in 97.28s. by 7 lenghts I'm not a pedigree expert...but I think this Spring Halo filly out of a Bright Again mare is better on short distances...her sire gives better dirt racers, but her dam's sire has had a lot of turf champions here in brazil |

I would have scratched too and re-enter in a higher class too once you announced to the world your plans to claim.

I got your point...and you're right...its better to own 10% of a good horse than 100% of a bad one...and I agree with you.
Here in Brazil we don't have those partnerships you have in the US (West Point Thoroughbreds, Adena Venture, Team Valor, etc.)...so we have to find ourselves a way to get 100% of a horse that is being raced badly (I mean with horses far better than him) and has potential to race well against less talented horses... Here we have private partnerships...but those are more for yearlings...which are much more expensive and spent one year in training before start racing...and these private partnerships are among those wealthy families, you know?...those that can afford US$100k in a single horse Even those partnerships that you have in the US are for unproven horses...when a horse has shown his potential, costs are prohibitive...there is not much upside i think. To have upside you must find a horse that is not on the spotlight yet... |

Now I can almost hear a song coming on.What's that sound? It's like the chorus from a Fiddler on the Roof Song, but the words are a lil different(same enthusiasm though.)
