What could be better than the ride he gave Flashy Bull in the '06 Derby?

He rode Lure. I wasnt on either side of the fence on his ride in this race, it was just a good race that I was thinking of. Lure set the 5 furlong track record 1st time out at Belmont also. 56 and change. Since broken by Kelly Kip.

Seems like it's been a long time since the Gotham was run on the Aqueduct main track.
I guess Mike forgot there is that pesky rail on the inside.
He does get 2 thumbs up for Chntl though.

Mike Smith is a terrible rider, I never understood why he was ever considered an A list Jock. Probably a testament to great horses as in Lure or Holy Bull that they were able to win inspite of him. If ever there was a walkover race and all the horse had to do was jog around the track, he would still probably race the poor horse in the 5 path all the way around.

The problem is that every once in a while he has a decent ride which can cost you just as much as when he devalue's a horse that should win by trying to violate the laws of physics on a race track...a real head case but if legend serves supposedly a very nice and charitable guy....

Smith is a complete incompetent... yet for years, McGaughey, Mott, Jerkens, etc. continued to use him on some of their best horses.. makes sense..

You don't ride as many good horses as Smith has, or win as many stakes as Smith has, or win back-to-back eclipse awards etc.. if you're a terrible rider..

Do you really think you want to include Jerkens?

He probably only used Smith when Noel Wynter was unavailable.
