Pyro work video
Posted on Kentuckyderby.com.
4f in 49.80. In my untrained opinion, looked like he wanted to do more and was under a tight hold early. He pulled a little around the turn and threw his head up. Took him awhile to switch leads going home, but he leveled off when he saw the wire and quickened his stride. Typical Assmussen work.

Shouldn't he be a little beyond having problems switching leads? . . . the head throwing thing isn't a particularly good sign either. . .

Something does not seem right with Pyro. His work time was not impressive at all. 1 offical work since his last and it is at 4 fr ?

Actually, Pyro had an untimed 6f work in the heavy fog last week. Pyro's last work before he won the La Derby was 4f in 50.4. I don't think any of the other horses that ran on Apr 12 (Bluegrass or Arkansas) have worked more than once since. Z Fortune (Asmussen)was even slower.
Without getting into it too deep. Yesterday's main workers Colonel and the fillies are always trained fast. Hardy learned from Baffert who put sharp drills into his Derby winners. Jones worked Hard Spun very fast last year. Asmussen, on the other hand, held Curlin to a 1:02 work before the Breeders Cup.

May I ask how you know for a fact that Pyro's feet are bothering him?
Did someone's friend of a cousin of a friend who works horses in the AM give this news out, too, or did the colt tell you? |

I looked at the gallop, and to be honest, I dont find it bad. Yes he was tossing his head, but he wanted to do more than the rider wanted him to!!! So of course he would throw his head and let the rider know he didnt like going slow. He really got antsy when another horse went by down on the rail, but I like that, it shows me he wants to go, and not let the other horse get away. jmvho And I will add that after seeing him in March for the Risen Star, he looks like he has matured alot.

Welsh said he liked what he saw and thinks Pyro is "flourishing".
