Default Ipi Tombe

Some of you might remember this Zimbabwe bred filly/mare that won the Dubai Duty Free and was came over for Team Valor and won her only US start before being retired with an injury. Anyhooo, her first foal is scheduled to debut in the 7th race at Belmont Saturday in a 7F turf race. Sadler's Wells is the sire of this 3YO.

That was brutal when she got hurt... Was exciting as hell when she came here.

Did you expect much of her when she came here? That was one of the all-time negative trainer changes

It wasn't a "was" -- it was actually an "is" . . . She was in training over here, raced and was retired after she got hurt, under the care of her new trainer.

The trainer change was Mike de Kock to Eliott Walden.

Barry Irwin would never put any of his horses, that he uses others money to buy, in the hands of an incompentent trainer. He uses guys like Mark Hening & Ralph Nicks as his trainers.

He is not training today. This was back when the horse was purchased, brought over here to the US, raced and retired.

I'll tell ya all a funny story about EW-boy wonder trainer.

I was a part owner in a excellent 2yo that won his 1st race in open company 7f at SAR in 2002. He breezed a 35 and change in a prerace work. Ran down some very good horses in that race and won impressively. Next out ran 3rd in the Champagne Stakes @ Bel. WinStar made a 75% $700,000 private purchase from us for this colt as he was an early Derby horse and they didn't have one Derby Eligible or ready.

So EW gets his hands on this colt who never has been injured...and you guess it...all types of things start happening which is not so uncommon.

But the best part is as a 3 yo he races the same colt at SAR, horse runs poorly. I go to the barn to visit my colt (which is now a gelding, unbeknownst to the 25% remaining owners) and he makes the comment that the colt hates the track. Now this is the same colt that ran the daylights on the same surface only 11 months prior. I just looked at this guy in amazement..like he never knew this colt won his initial race over the same surface and worked a 35 breeze. I knew then that this guy was clueless. He didn't last much longer as WinStars trainer either shortly after that.
