Default Running for Purse Only

Why would a horse only run for purse money? I really don't understand this at all. Also, if the horse that races for Purse Money Only and wins, does the tote pay to win for the 2nd place finisher? Please fill me in.....

Thanks

The tote pays to win for the 2nd place finisher. They usually race for purse only because of a late scratch to an entry or anything that might be viewed as "unfair" to the betting public.

what else would a horse run for. However you look at it is only designed to protect the bettor. No matter which part of the entry you liked it prevents the bettor.

I still dont get it. How could a horse running in a race just for Purse Money Only be unfair to the bettor?

Lets just say Bernardini and Deputy Glitters ran as an entry and Bernardini was scratched at the gate, would you still want the ticket?

If he's scratched at the gate, and you're on the rail, what are the odds you'll be able to cancel in time?

In addition to that, not all tracks/OTBs/etc. let you cancel tickets.
