I have a feeling that's not the last time we'll see Joey P on the CT strip.

I figured the Colonial Turf would be tough to make figures for with all the rain. The track must have been slowing down by the minute.
Joey P wasn't far off the track record at CT. If he had any pressure at all or if the jockey had let him loose he had a good chance to break it. |

Considering the track record at 4.5f at CT is by the Charles Town stalwart Outcashem, it would have been a feat to see Joey P. break that record. Here's hoping CT continues to card open sprint races with decent purses that draw legitimate, non-WV bred fields.

surprised that the 2 colonial races were that high. conditions looked to worsen quickly.

When the conditions are like that - some horses seem to handle the going a lot better than others causing FAR greater margins of victory and defeat than normal. I tend to dismiss those performances - but it doesn't mean those horses weren't possibly clearly best anyway. |

It's impossible not to think of Brilliance in the Kent a couple years ago. Bottom line....the fig is meaningless. Sailor's Cap is a good horse, probably the leading US 3YO turf horse right now, but quantifying that race considering the conditions is fruitless. I don't know why this is hard for people to understand.

Maybe he hated the turf condition a little less than some of the others. Who knows. He certainly didn't run particularly well. I have a much easier time buying that he ran six or seven lengths worse than his prior efforts than I would saying he ran a similar race.

If ever there was a case to split the variant.
I don't think Sailor's Cap is some superhorse anyway... He was one of the best if not the best in the TurfCup, and then it rained, and he is clearly the best of that field in the non-firm-turf... He ran pretty well, and maybe some of them were hurt by the surface. All they're doing is picking a number that feels good anyway. Working backwards is what they're doing. They may as well of given out a 98. I thought it was a 98. 98 Feels better than a 93. |
