Default r.i.p. l.a.times horse racing coverage

after years of cutbacks, the times most recent layoffs/buyouts included bill christine and larry stewart, the only reporters still covering racing.

they aren't even running result charts at del mar after having previously eliminated running the entries.

the only coverage is an occasional story by sports editor bill dwyer.

the writing's been on the wall for a long time but for someone like me that grew up reading jim murray in the times, this is still a bit jaw dropping.

It makes good fish wrap. The L.A Times reduced racing coverage about 2 years ago. We are a fringe sport that doesn't rate coverage over skateboarding.

Only if C-Nak started dating Paris Hilton.

Roger Stein on the Roger Stein show and Bob Ike, Jon Lindo and Jay Privman on Thoroughbred LA show encouraged listeners to cancel their LA Times subscriptions on yesterday's show. The Times had zero coverage of opening day at Del Mar. Both shows talked about great racing coverage by the Lang Newspaper Group papers which are comprised of the following:
* Los Angeles Daily News
* Long Beach Press-Telegram
* Torrance Daily Breeze
* Inland Valley Daily Bulletin
* San Bernardino Sun
* Redlands Daily Facts
* San Gabriel Valley Tribune
* Pasadena Star-News
* Whittier Daily News

Los Angeles area locals can call 1-800-232-NEWS to subscribe. They feature 4 handicappers, full charts and daily coverage of the live So. California meets.

If they want to save some money and fire a couple of writers, that is bad enough, but there is no excuse for not showing the entries or results.

I cancelled my suscription a few days ago and I have gotten that paper my entire life. I cancelled just out of priniciple. They are just so arrogant that they would have the nerve to not even show the entries or results. It's as if they don't even care what their readers want. They just think they can do whatever they want and the readers won't even notice. They told me that they have had a ton of complaints about it too. It's amazing that they wouldn't reinstate showing the results and entries immediately if they are getting complaints and cancellations.

The Los Angeles Daily News stepped up its coverage of racing as a result of the LA Times move. They did a nice article on the opening day of the Del Mar meet. Apparently, half of the people cancelling their subscriptions recently have cited the removal of covering horseracing as a reason for cancelling.

The Pasadena Star does a nice job covering Santa Anita, and I enjoy the writing in the North County Times in covering Del Mar.

I never miss the Roger Stein show. He shoots from the hip and talks about subjects that most racing related shows don't approach.

The Los Angeles Times is owned by the same guy who own the Chicago Tribune...and for now the Chicago Cubs. Chicago real estate magnate Sam Zell bought the Tribune and its companies last year.

Newspapers are moaning about low sales and low ad sales, but all they know how to do is cut costs. I haven't seen one example of an attempt to increase quality or alter focus.

The Dallas Morning News out did them when they cut back and fired Gary West the week .befor the BC at LS, The Dallas papers have been lucky to have Gary and Randy Moss both but the News buying ou the hearld and dumb decisions by management have left Dallas without a turf writer. I have experienced some good sportswriters here, Blackie Sherod wos the best and is now retired, Blackie was so good he finished as a feature on the editorial page and in his youger years would cover the political partys conventions and showed his excelance with his colomus. Gary West is known for his turf writing but I maintain he could be in the Blackie class. Just a very good writer that happens to cover the turf.

If the papers don't want to cover horseracing the owners may as well buy their own page, run their own ads, and have writers write about how great such and such horses are and how great the upcoming race is.
