Default Workout injury ends Big Brown Cup hopes, career..

Haskin/Johnson, B-H:
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...workout-injury

Dual classic winner Big Brown has been retired after sustaining an injury during a workout at Aqueduct the morning of Oct. 13.

The winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) had worked in company with Kip Deville over the turf course, with the stablemates finishing together in final time of 1:12 4/5 for six furlongs.

Afterward, it was determined that the colt had grabbed a quarter on the inside of the right front foot. The injury and subsequent retirement means the highly anticipated showdown between he 3-year-old colt and reigning Horse of the Year Curlin will not take place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I).

WOW. I was no fan of his, but I would never wish this on any horse; I'm so sorry he won't get to run in the Breeder's Cup......he was a terrific colt. What a blow to his owners - it's like a punch in the gut. You get thisclose to the finish line, and wham - something like this happens. You gotta have terribly thick skin to be a racing fan..............

it's a shame with all these foot problems,
they probably won't breed him now right?

This blows. I wanted to see what he could do vs older horses.

It looks like he will breed:

"Big Brown has been retired," said Michael Iavarone, co-owner of IEAH Stables. "He not only tore the bulb off his foot, but half the foot was torn off. We did everything we could to get to the Breeders' Cup. It's devastating. And what makes it even worse is that he worked great."

Big Brown will enter stud at Robert Clay's Three Chimneys farm for the 2009 breeding season.

So if Big Brown isn't there, does that mean Curlin might not run since it won't mean anything?

Tough news for the sport, but the Breeder's Cup will still be fun!

I agree here.
I think we can say that at this point knowing it isn't a life-threatening injury.
Brown may have been near even-money in the BC. It really stinks.
That's how it goes. Hopefully there are some turf imports in the race and near 14 runners.

Hopefully Brown has a happy retirement.

I think Elvis hit the nail on the head. It seemed that alot of people were on the fence whether they would play/watch the races, with all that surrounds the event (mainly Poly, Negative sentimate against the BC, etc.) This was the one matchup that might have swayed those people. Like him or not this is a big blow to the event.

Let the Casino Drive is a lock threads begin.

I hear you. You don't want to say that they are lying but I think to deny that the thought enters into a lot of people's minds about the legitimacy of it is to not be honest.

Better he tear his foot off now working, than get his head torn off by Curlin in 2 weeks.
