Bullish Luck bows out
I always thought that when he was finally retired, I'd be able to write something special.... just the most fantastic horse, my favorite horse in training.
I've already said everything I can possibly say though... there have been threads and threads, documenting every injury, his trips to Dubai and Japan, every race, workout, swim ... I'm just completely thrilled that this grand old champion finally gets to go where he belongs - to Living Legends (with his old stablemate Silent Witness!!!). He IS a legend. http://www.hkjc.com/english/news/ima...4_cmile_02.jpg Thank you Bullish Luck for all the lovely memories, for keeping this brutal game fun, for reminding me that it's not always about winning, for bowing out a gallant 5th in the Cup. His replays, record... http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/h...&Option=1#htop Living Legends... http://www.livinglegends.org.au/index.html |

Was a little afraid after that brave run Mr. Cruz might have second thoughts if you know what I'm saying. They did right by him though and there's nothing like a happy ending. I'll post pictures of his farewell at Sha Tin and of his arrival at LL when they happen. |

They've already revised the top 50 and I looked yesterday and thought he was 11 but I guess it was actually 13 (since he ends his career at a 119 rating).
Anyway... he did go out near the top. * * * HKJC..... Cruz, Prebble hail Bullish Luck as one of the greats Trainer Tony Cruz could be forgiven for thinking this holiday season resembles the end of an era now that stable stalwart Bullish Luck's retirement from racing coincides with the departure from Hong Kong of Felix Coetzee, his former retained jockey and close friend. While those involved at the sharp end of Hong Kong racing are not known for their sentimentality, Cruz says he will nevertheless feel a pang of nostalgia when he watches the former Horse of the Year parade one last time at Sha Tin on New Year's Day, the occasion of his tenth birthday. "It will be strange not having him around since he's been with us for so long - I've had him for six seasons and it's been privilege to train one as good and as genuine as him," said Cruz reflecting on the horse that exits the stage as the second highest moneyspinner in local history at HK$63m. "He was very sound, never missed any big races and he took us all over the world. He never ran a bad race and gave us so many highlights. The day he beat Silent Witness a short head in the Champions Mile stands out, as does his win in the Yasuda Kinen - he was so impressive that day. Even on his last start in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup he was still very competitive against some of the best horses in the world. We'll miss him but he has earned a long and happy retirement." Bullish Luck won five Gr.1 races in his career, including two successive Champions Mile (2005, 2006) victories and the Yasuda Kinen (2006) in Japan. He was also a narrow and unlucky runner-up in the 2004 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup and placed third in the Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race, as an eight-year-old in March 2007. Brett Prebble was in the saddle that night in Nad Al Sheba and described the son of Royal Academy as "easily the best miler I have ridden." Recalling his Champions Mile and Yasuda Kinen double that sealed Horse of the Year honour in 2006, Prebble said: "He had very rare acceleration, nothing like I've ever experienced on a miler. In the Champions Mile I got a strong cart into the race there and at the top of the straight I gave him just one click and off he went. It felt like he had the race settled in one stride. But he was even better in Tokyo. I'm honoured to have been part of his story." |

Farewell for Bullish Luck on New Year's Day meeting 30 December 2008 The Hong Kong Jockey Club will stage a farewell ceremony for Bullish Luck during the Sha Tin race meeting on the New Year's Day (Thursday, 1 January) - the day when he reaches the age of 10. It will offer racegoers a final chance to give their thanks and best wishes to this 2005/06 Horse of the Year, who ran his last race of a glittering career for a highly creditable fifth in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup. The Club will present a framed commemorative photo collection on the horse's major victories, to Bullish Luck's Owner Mr Wong Wing Keung, in the Sha Tin Parade Ring after Race 4 on 1 January. As a Private Purchase (PP) import from Great Britain, Bullish Luck followed in the footsteps of Fairy King Prawn by becoming the second Hong Kong-based racehorse to win Japan's top mile event, the Yasuda Kinen, in June 2006. It was this overseas success, along with his convincing victory in the HK Group 1 Champions Mile a month earlier, which earned him the title of Horse of the Year in 2005/06. While Bullish Luck is still the only horse to date to win the US$1 million bonus in the Asian Mile Challenge, he is also the second highest all-time earner locally, amassing a total career purse of HK$63,045,680. In total Bullish Luck won five times at Group One level in his career, including a famous victory in the 2005 Champions Mile when he ended the 17-race undefeated winning streak of the legendary Silent Witness. He also ran third in the 2007 Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race. This was his first and only career start on dirt and it remains the only place finish for a Hong Kong-based runner in this race. He was also ranked 7th at an international rating of 120 (Mile) in the 2005/06 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, in August 2006. Mr William A Nader, the Club's Executive Director of Racing, praised the achievements attained by this Tony Cruz-trained globetrotter over the years. "Bullish Luck was one of the most competitive horses I have ever seen. To compete favourably against top class horses at his advanced age was absolutely remarkable and his lifetime record speaks for itself. I would like to congratulate his trainer Tony Cruz and owner Wong Wing Keung for campaigning a horse that produced some of the greatest memories in Hong Kong racing history," Mr Nader said. This respectful gelding by Royal Academy will soon be leaving for Australia for his well-deserved retirement. "It will be strange not having him around since he's been with us for so long - I've had him for over years and it's been a privilege to train one as good and as genuine as him," said Tony Cruz. "He took us all over the world and never ran a bad race and gave us so many highlights. The day he beat Silent Witness a short head in the Champions Mile stands out, as does his win in the Yasuda Kinen - he was so impressive that day. Even on his last start in the Cup, just a couple weeks short of his tenth birthday, he was still very competitive against some of the best horses in the world. We'll miss him but he has earned a long and happy retirement." |

He kept his word.
http://www.derbytrail.com/forums/sho...ghlight=letter Mr. Bullish Luck, Esquire, is now at Living Legends. He was apparently greeted by about 50 kangaroos (... and was "surprised" ), but is now both relaxed and happy according to Mr. Clarke who was kind enough to take the time to update me. Thought a couple of you might want to know. |
