Question about wet synthetic surfaces

Do some horses like wet synthetic surfaces better than others? Do some regress over a wet synthetic surface even though they like a dry one?

I think wet synthetic surfaces are firmer than dry, but not "hard". I've only thought of that with turf-to-synthetic horses that have a strong preference in their turf races for a particular track rating (overseas races, not American)

At Arlington, speed does much better when it is wet, or just received rain. I think it tightens it up. Times also get quicker the day after it rains.

I find it hard to believe that the synthetic tracks would play the same, wet/dry or excessive heat/frozen

They are the best when wet . More like a dirt surface when it's fair .

if you recall the first year at Del Mar (poly,) the times were dreadfully slow. They sped them up tremendously last year by doing the unthinkable.. applying water..

yesterday seemed a tad slow though so Pro-Ride could be a different animal.

Yes, Del Mar's Polytrack surface was playing faster in the mornings, when the weather was cooler, than it was during the hotter Summer afternoons. So they started adding water to it to cool it off, which hardened the wax and tightened up the surface.

Pro-Ride uses a polymer that supposedly does not change with temperature. How has the Santa Anita track been these past couple of days? Any noticeable wet spots from the rain? Were they tilling more than usual to dry it out, or anything like that?

Needless to say, I have fallen behind in the drainage problems saga.

Great Question I am here in Ocala Florida We have 48 horses at OBS (Safe track) We were talking about this Yesterday it has been unseasonably cold here in the AM for the last 3 Days the lows were like 21, 24 ,28 the last 3 morning, Workouts the last 3 days have been off the charts (fast) plus the are around 200 2 year olds here for the 2 year old in training sale there 1/8th and 1/4 mile breezes the last 2 mornings have been Ultra fast. SO there is no question that the colder weather has made this track very very fast. (and I think this is one of best synthetic surface in the Country bar none).


THis will be interesting to Watch next week it is supposed to be in the mid to upper 70's for the next week or so. The official breeze show for the Sale is Friday the 13th( ) and Personally I don't think this track can be as fast as it has been the last 3 mornings so I believe there are going to be alot of disappointed Consigners come next friday afternoon when there babies dont work as fast as they did the last couple of mornings.

Be interesting to see how the surface is after some horse numbers get over it, and it gets some use. I think high use has a bigger influence on some of the surfaces than anticipated.

Yes they have been tilling it between every race, which they dont nornally do when its dry. I beleive they are still trying to learn what they need to do to service the Pro Ride under these conditions.
