Default Hialeah in the courts: Go Get 'Em Halsey

http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/49149.htm

This should be fun. I'm not familiar with the property laws in Florida and the deed between Brunetti and the City of Hialeah but I'd imagine Halsey knows plenty about his chances. Anybody familiar with the situation and think it's got enough merit for us to be hopeful? Or are we watching a valiant effort doomed to fail? I can't help but root for them. I also can't help but loathe Brunetti's behavior, so whatever it turns out he's legally entitled to, I know he's not been thinking about what's best for the track or sport. His own pocket, sure...er..kudos, Mr. B? Nah.

Are you like me, remembering the stories from the Black Stallion series as part of the romance of Hialeah? I know the images and film are nostalgic, and I remember seeing it several years ago on tv but I often read it as settings for stories in my childhood, and whenever I hear people talk about what Hialeah was like in person, it seems to be all that Walter Farley described and more. The colors of the actual flamingos and the green foliage with the horses and silks. Just spectacular.

Halsey Minor may be insane.

probably. i don't know how many times i read his books when i was younger, and it hasn't been that long since i re-read a couple of them. i need to hit ebay and get the rest....

i just think out of all the tracks that have had money pumped into them, hialeah deserved it the most. gulfstream hasn't been right since they re-worked the track configuration-most of all, i found it dammed depressing when i saw the pics of hiealeah recently, and saw all the grass growing on the main track.

This seems like a real longshot though if he makes Brunetti spend money to defend himself it is worth it.

^^^I agree. Make Brunetti dig into his pockets and spend some money.

I would love to see Hialeah up and running again, but I will not hold my breath.

With the sport in it's current state, you all really want to see Hialeah return? Do we really need to spend millions for another track that's going to draw 1000 people a day? Racing is dying not growing.

Use the number in context. If I make $1 million in salary this year, I've had a great year. But if I made $2 million the year before, it wasn't so great. Handle was down this year significantly from the year before.

Everything is down in gaming... racing, casinos, cards, slots... all down. Using those numbers to prove racing is dying is baseless.

speaking of numbers in context... you said attendance is down, your reason to say that the sport is 'dying'. but that would be like saying only 80k watched the super bowl this year, since that's all that was in attendence. it certainly doesn't tell the whole story.
and the handle may be down-how much of that is due to almost constant disputes over wagering and signals. i heard on steves show the other day that january is down; coincidentally, january was when vegas lost some signals, wasn't it?

This is true. So does that change the point?

As Travis straightened me out, all gambling is down. Most everything is down in our country. That doesn't scream out to me that now is the time to invest millions into building up a racetrack. But it's not my money. People thought it was a dumb idea to build another racetrack in Dallas though.
