Default pro vs con starting your horse @ Flakes or Belmont

What are the pluses and minuses of each track for starting a 2 yr old at the track ?

The options are Saratoga, Belmont and Flakes and there are pluses to all 3 . I suppose this thread is geared to horsemen, not folks looking for their next meal at Siros .

One has higher purses, higher expenses to keep a horse there and tougher competition ... the other has lower purses, lower expenses to keep a horse there and softer competition.

its a no brainer. F Lakes has lower purses and easier competition. Toga and Bel has tougher competition, prestige in winning at Toga and higher purses.

But I think you knew this already, so why ask

Since I live generally equidistant from all the NY tracks I'm leaning in the direction of cost effectiveness .

Base at Flakes and ship to NYRA if you feel you have the proper quality. I'd let the quality of the stock dictate as most Flakes horses cannot compete at NYRA tracks. With modest stock, the Lakes is better. Why pay big bucks to get beat up? If you get ahold of a good horse, you can always ship in as Charlton Baker and Mike Lecesse do.

You could always base the horse at PID even if it's a NY bred.

It will cost you no more than Finger Lakes. The MSW purse is way more, and though you'll be facing opens ... most of the horses who won the 2yo MSW races here last meet would have got killed even in sub-par NY bred MSW races at NYRA.

You also get to train on a brand new synthetic track that doesn't get chewed up in the mornings .. because there aren't many stalls on the grounds to fill with horses.

You could also train on Golden Missile's balls.

The only 2 yo NYB races the FL has are stakes. All the Maiden special weights for 2 year olds are open races and the purses arent very good

I'm shocked PID didn't get more 2yo shippers from there.

It was the Beaulah Park and Fort Erie based shippers running the show in the first couple 2yo MSW races last year.

Actually, given the level of competition, the purses aren't that bad, especially when you consider the open company "owner" awards that NY-breds are eligible for.

Encouraging point . Breeder awards are also part of the potential at Flakes .
