China's messing with us... North Korea says its ready for war and has its troops ready for war... they say if we shoot down whatever the heck they are launching soon that there will be war. Of course, Russia, Venezuala and the entire middle east (except Isreal) hate us too.

It is a VERY scary world out there right now... and that statement has nothing to do with the very scary world ecomony.

North Korea can cause problems in the region but isnt a real threat to us. Venezuela doesnt hate us, the nut job dictator that leads the country uses us as an enemy for his own uses. It has always been a scary world but of course we need to cut defense spending...

that's a surtass (surface towed array sonar ship) used in anti-submarine warfare. i was on board a much smaller version of the one pictured that was the prototype for this class of ship in the 90's.

the one I was on was a converted commercial oil drilling vessel. They used the well in the bottom of the ship to lower the towed array in the water. the one pictured has the obvious advantage of allowing the towed array to trail behind the ship without risking contact with the bottom of the ship itself.

the sonar on these light up everything. there is no hiding if you're a sub and one is in the area. this is also the sonar that environmental groups have complained is a whale killer.

i'd take the subtext of this story to be a chinese sub was in the area we wanted a close look at and the chinese didn't want us to see. i'd be intersted to know if they've launched a new class and we're doing due diligence.

but i doubt they have anything that can compete with our sea wolf class-but you're right on, something was in the area that they don't want us checking out. that and the fact that they are sooo touchy about their space, and taiwan of course. it may be int'l waters, but it's their int'l waters-just ask them!

the frequencies used and other technical aspects are classified but the existence of the program isn't. it's kind of hard to completely hide something that big. even in the 90's when some of the concept's being used were new, you'd be surprised what wasn't classified. i can tell you the towed array was liquid filled and didn't float. and that was brand new back then.

the retrofitted oil driller i was on was run by raytheon (big defense contractor). most of the time there was no one from the navy on board. you had a lot of ex-navy sonarmen hired by raytheon for the program. the concept was "proved" on the smaller ship and then raytheon received the contract to build the behemouth's pictured.

i just saw another pic-you can see a chinese guy on the bow of his smaller boat with a pole in the water (keep it clean guys) -ostensibly to snag the towed array. now, i don't know if that's true or not-i can't help but wonder how long that guy could have managed to hold on had he snagged it...
