DUBAI // The UAE was battered by thunderstorms and winds of up to 100 kph last night and forecasters predicted five more days of turbulent weather.
Quote:
Visibility at Abu Dhabi International Airport was down to about 50 metres as a sandstorm took hold and flights were diverted to Al Ain and Muscat airports for about 30 minutes.

The storms are likely to last for at least the next five days, Mr Stevens said. “Until Sunday we are going to be reporting rain and thunderstorms every day. It will mostly be cloudy but there will be sunny breaks as well – it is going to be what we call ‘extremely unsettled’.”

They postponed the World Cup ( for a week maybe? ) one year because of bad weather. It may have been the year Silver Charm won.

Arabian Nights event tonight moved indoors. It looks like a big storm for Sunday. Hopefully they will get away with it on Saturday

Shiek Mo will have to build a massive covered track before next year.

The rain of today wasn't that bad (by American standards), and overall, not terrible for the track. This is a very sandy, deep surface, so it holds well and they ran over a sloppy main track back in December and the results were fair and varied.

The track today was good, even after two different storms, one Wednesday evening, another Thursday morning (lasting about an hour). I had lunch with an Australian turf writer who walked dirt course out and turf course back through the homestretch around 11:30 AM, after the main rains, and he confirmed both were fine.

The chances of cancelling - near nil in my book. No holding back - rip up the turf course all they want. The benefit is, the dirt can remain sealed for 23 hours a day until the races - unlike say, Monmouth running for three days in a mess before the BC.

Barring a monsoon...should be ok.

Greatest sport in the world You got independence about 100 years before we could inflict it on you-although the first International match was played in Brooklyn between the US and Canada over 30 years before the 1st England-Australia Test match
