NJ Sports gambling bill

passes the house (30-4). needs to pass the senate next, which it should do.. and already has the governor's approval.

sportsbooks coming soon to Atlantic City and table games to the racetrack/casinos.

it's legal due to the 1992 act... just like the online racebooks are basically all out of Oregon, due to the same 92 law. Since Delaware is one of the 4 states that congress has already said could pass a state sports gaming law, no extra approval of congress should be needed. Only state approval.

If the $380 billion number is correct, and I have nothing to dispute it, that's absolutely staggering. At an average takeout of 4.5% that's $17 billion in revenue.

Keep in mind TOTAL handle on racing was approximately $15 billion last year.

We are talking about NJ, which was NOT grandfathered in 1992 (by their own idiotic choice at the time).

I just went back into espn (where I first saw this)... and it's Delaware that's approving it.. not NJ. Delaware is on the 92 list. Needs to be NJ due to Atlantic City. The perfect place for a sportsbook is on a boardwalk casino in Atl City. wonder if Del's going to be where some of the online casino/poker places are going to try to be set up in (if Congress passes the repealing of the internet gaming law).

The original poster was talking about NJ, unless he got his facts mixed up. NJ is trying the same thing as Delaware, and the lawsuit is already filed. Their state government is moving on this as well:

Sponsors of the bill are trying to expand it to allow sports betting at the state's three racetracks and betting on NCAA games that don't involve New Jersey schools. Original poster corrected himself- ESPN article was, in fact, referencing the vote in Delaware (which I should have realized since there's more than 34 members of the house in NJ.) Don't disagree that they really missed the boat in '92, however.

Good article from the TO Star, but factually incorrect- you can in fact bet UNLV and UNR games in Vegas, this was changed about 8-10 years ago.

You pretty much nailed it by saying that NJ screwed the pooch when it had the option and denied it. Even though NJ has some hurdles, from what I've heard, NJ will be having sports betting in the future. It's just a matter of time and energy before it gets done.

Well, there are Congressmen currently trying to reduce anti-gambling laws in the U.S. Congress (Barney Frank trying to get online gambling restrictions eliminated.) If that passes, I would have to think there would be a strong possibility of the loosening of the PASPA restrictions.

On which belief? I firmly believe NJ will have sports betting some time in the future. I just don't know when.
