I always regarded Shane Sellers as one heck of a jockey and he did it when the competition was tougher than it was today. He was at his best at the Gulfstream meets in the 90's and if he can ride to 70% of that level, it will be great news indeed.

That's a tough jockey colony at Evangeline. Diego Saenz has gone from big block puzzles to Archie comics.

Word is that he will be riding first call for Wayne Lukas during the Saratoga meet.

He was a bit overrated as a jock ... why is it no secret that he has decided to come back? His career as a country music singer failed that badly? |

I only had one encounter with Shane , he was riding a stake horse at Hollywood and my boss named him on a first time starter.
The groom and I were walking the horse out of the paddock and I said hello and that the colt was kinda dumb about his lead changes , he was very receptive and actually thanked me for the heads up , you dont get that from many "big riders" and we actually ran a good second to a horse named Fusachi Pegasus.... I liked Shane just from the brief encounter , I hope he does well in his comeback.

Out of retirement, Sellers emerges to win his first race BOB HEIST • BHEIST@THEADVERTISER.COM • JULY 3, 2009 http://www.theadvertiser.com/article...rt-for-Sellers OPELOUSAS - As the sound of cracking metal echoed toward the backside barns when the gate flew open on the first race Thursday night at Evangeline Downs, Shane Sellers was finally at peace. It was man, horse and five-and-half furlongs of dirt race track. No more fights with a horse-racing establishment that helped force his decision to walk away from the sport after winning 4,069 races and more than $122 million at the age of 38. No more fractured relationships with trainers, owners and fellow jockeys. No more strain on the loves of his life - wife Kelli and children Shali, Saban and Steiner. What Sellers had in his hands were the reins of Ide Ball, the fifth betting choice of six horses at 6-1 odds in the $25,000 claiming race.

Shane is riding for Asmussen tonight at Evangeline Downs, even money favorite and at 118lbs - all others at 123lbs.
At one time, Sellers was Steve's go-to Jock. I heard that Shane retired because of the "insurance" issue that faces soo many jocks. If Shane pissed anyone off it could have been Steve, but it would appear that he his relations are on the mend too. If he comes back full force he could be one heck of a jock again! |
