![]() Interesting trip note piece from capable Paul Daley of Lowell (Mass.) Sun.. Daley is a HUGE fan of the game and does a helluva nice job...
http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_12962660 Saratoga nights can be awfully long if your pockets are as bare as Lady Godiva on horseback. Mindful of that fact, here are some horses to watch who should find the winners' circle sometime during the 141st meet at the cherished track on Union Avenue. They are listed by the date last raced if you care to look up the chart. July 19, Race 1 -- Fuhrever Dancing, a $20,000 claimer for Wimpress Stables and trainer Gary Gullo, ran within three lengths of Commentator's track record at 7 1-2 furlongs, set when he was a three-year-old. Now 8, Commentator will be trying to win another Whitney Stakes on Aug. 8. Look for Fuhrever Dancing to successfully move up in class at the Saratoga meet. July 19, Race 2 -- Rick Violette's Chairman Now broke in the air and was left at the start in this maiden race for two-year-olds. Jockey Edgar Prado and his mount spotted the field nine lengths but still made up ground in the stretch. Look for a much-improved effort next time out. July 19, Race 9 -- Winner Courageous Cat and runner up Al Khali were only a few ticks off Roman Envoy's track record of 1:39.38 for a mile-and-a-sixteenth, set in May of 1992 on the turf. Both horses should be major players in the $150,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes on Aug. 14 and/or the $100,000 Saranac Stakes on Sept. 6. July 18, Race 10 -- Go Go Bar, trained by John Terranova for IEAH Stables, won this turf entry-level allowance race for fun and can easily move through her next condition. July 16, Race 8 -- In the Virgo Libra Stakes at a mile on turf, Linda Rice's Ziptronic became involved in a suicidal pace duel with Strong Impact, who finished last. Despite completing the initial six furlongs in 1:10.55, Ziptronic still finished fifth. Give him strong consideration in his next start. July 15, Race 8 -- Carlos Martin trains most of the horses for Flying Zee Stable. So, it was most unusual to see 83-year-old Frank "Pancho" Martin, Carlos' grandfather, listed as the trainer of record for Olde Glamour, winner of the Jersey Girl Stakes for three-year-old fillies. The Hall of Famer hasn't forgotten how to train a horse and Olde Glamour may be a late-in-life present. Watch for this filly at the Spa. July 12, Race 9 -- Tizway will move into the Whitney Stakes (Aug. 8) off this optional claiming ($50,000) win with a Beyer speed figure of 102 where par should have been a number of 93. Don't discount his chances, as he beat 2008 Belmont Stakes winner Da' Tara by seven widening lengths. July 11, Race 2 -- Hot Minute, a first-time starter for trainer Rick Dutrow, was most impressive in this maiden race for New York-breds. He should win again in his next allowance condition. July 10, Race 2 -- Grassy, appropriately named, won this turf maiden race for trainer Christophe Clement and Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilshneider off a six-week layoff. He can win again in allowance company. Check to see if jockey Edgar Prado rides him back. July 10, Race 8 -- Earning a Beyer figure of 96, Karakorum Elektra, a New York-bred trained by Linda Rice, can either stay in open company or stay with his own kind and win a second-level allowance next out. July 9, Race 2 -- Figure out what price you're willing to accept on General Maximus in a first-level New York-bred allowance race because he'll air again. However, the son of Freud will probably be a prohibitive favorite and may only be a play in the exotics or serial wagers. Paul Daley's e-mail address is pjdaleys@verizon.net.
