The Kelso was named after a 5-time Horse of the Year, I need not tell you.

The Miss Grillo is named for one of the toughest mares of the 1940s and a specialist in beating the guys at marathon distances. She was knocking heads with horses like Stymie, Pot o' Luck and Monte Rico and giving them all they wanted. She had been a top 2yo back home in Argentina and after winning her country's Oaks, she stepped up and beat the boys in the Derby. In the US she won the San Juan Capistrano (on dirt), two runnings of the Pimlico Cup (2.5 miles), the Exterminator H (1.5 miles), the Governor Bowie H (1.75 miles), and the New York H (2.25 miles). Just to show she wasn't limited to marathons, she won two runnings of the Diana H over the ladies (9f dirt).

I have to conclude that the Pilgrim is named for the folks who settled at Plymouth colony, as the only horse with that name who achieved any prominence raced in Ireland (although he was a USA-bred and stood in Kentucky).

The Plymouth was first run in 1979, which seems late for getting around to naming a race after the Plymouth colony folks. Maybe it was named in honor of John Wayne, who died in 1979.

Perhaps the NYRA mouthpieces can clear this up.

Off the Turf events should be scrubbed. I hope the trainers all scratch out. Come on Mr. Campo.

5 horse Turf race... Lovely. No Super/No Tri and possibly no show pools if we get scratches. How much handle is being lost by running these races. I know there is a million excuses. NYRA needs someone running the show that doesn't accept excuses

'The race is named for Joseph E. Widener's horse, Pilgrim, winner of the 1919 Remsen Stakes.'

thanks to wikipedia.

the horse also won the roamer, and was second in the jerome.

As good of a job as PJ did to reschedule the Bowling Green from opening day to the first Sunday with the forecast of rain, he really dropped the ball here. The long range forecast showed a solid chane of rain for several days. The reason given for going back to the 48 hour entry box was supposedly to avoid these situations. I am well aware that weather forecasters are pretty weak but how do you take the chance and end up with a card like this. I know these are BC preps, but you could run them anytime next week as Kee. has several preps next Sat. & Sun.

Nice to see there are some other dissenters on what is clearly a NYRA stronghold. Needless to say, this weekend pretty much demonstrates that NYRA racing is JUST ABOUT DONE. It's all POLY's fault, of course.

What could be next, here, a revolt against Beyers?
(or those 3:1 pick3's/4's)
