You should look into some stats on ex-Calder horses that wind up in big barns on the East and West coasts.

Vladmir Cerin, Hollendorfer, and Kristin Mulhall (Imperialism?) have done well in CA with those types.

Don't they say that Calder has its own unique surface or something?

Visually, that appeared to be a perfect example of the re-breaking that we used to see constantly from horses trained by the "usual suspects". Dutrow said the horse ran that way at Calder before he got him (stopping on the turn, then starting up again straightening out). After watching the replays, I certainly cannot verify that. He didn't corner well in his maiden victory, but he sure didn't look beaten at the top of the stretch like he did yesterday.

He 'rebroke' to come home the last quarter in :25.2?

I'm pretty well on the record regarding Dutrow, but I don't get the theme here..

The winner went :23, :23 (:46), :23.3 (1:09.3), :25.2 (1:35.0). That's :46 for the first half mile and :49 for the second half mile. In his 2nd start maidenbreak at Calder under Andrade, he got an 81 Beyer beating subsequent MSW winners Thank U Philippe (84 BSF) and Hear Ye Hear Ye (94 BSF). Saturday Homeboykris got an 89 Beyer, and the entire field behind him is right in line with the figures.

What's the outrageous shock exactly?

For the record, I bet the horse. Visually, without the other pertinent facts that you just presented, it just appeared he was done at the top of the stretch. Visuallly, it appeared he re-broke, although as you just stated, it was probably far more that the others were slowing down, as opposed to Homeboy Kris speeding up.

While no fan of Dutrow, this race seemed to fall apart late. Turning for home, it looked like Discreetly Mine's race to lose - and he did. Dublin looked dead turning for home, and yet he was only beaten 3.75 lengths at the finish. That he didn't lose significant ground through the lane suggests that there wasn't all that much running going on in front of him.

good point. if he didn't run a lick, but lost by that margin....the horses in front of him didn't seem to run much more than he did. i wouldn't cross dublin off any list just yet.

Discreetly Mine is talented, but he's not stretching out. I was rooting for him big time, but when he took the lead he just sort of treaded water instead of spurting away. This colt might be a nice sprinter...........but even a mile is beyond his capacity.

Ah, Steve, you're talking about a 2yo off of a 3 month layoff running a one-turn mile.

The horse paid over $13 for a reason ... and it's not like everyone in the world didn't know the horse would improve significantly beforehand.

Was it as dramatic as Silver Train, This One's For Phil, D' Funnybone ... no. But it was a move-up ... and it only doesn't seem outrageous because you pretty much knew going in that it would happen. It was just a matter if it would be good enough.

He's a 2yo going a one-turn mile ... it's too early to say that.

'$13.20 for a reason?' Yeah.. It was a 5 horse field once you crossed out the no-hope Overlap... What price should he have been?

In his maidenbreaker, Homeboy Kris went :22.2, :23.2 (:46.0), :13.0 (:59.0), :13.3 (1:12.3) for the 6f. (22.2, 23.2, 26.3 split into quarters.) Pretty identical to how he ran in the Champagne... And being a 2yo off a 90 day layoff, one might conclude that whatever improvement he showed is ordinary development. He had worked 31f since September 2 including a 5f turf drill followed by a full 6f breeze.

I'm not saying there may not be typical Dutrow program performance enhancement to come, but to roll eyes and scoff and snicker at what this horse did Saturday like it was some kind of putover is plain silly.
