A list should be started: leading sires via awful horses on the track.

Saint Ballado sucked .. outstanding as a sire.

I believe Lukas had Dynaformer getting beat 20 lengths every time he ran him on the dirt prior to his merciful retirement.

West Acre never even raced - he's been a very productive Florida sire.

Complaince never won a race ... he sired Fourstar's Allstar, Fourstardave, Pride of Summer, and Zippy Chippy.

I'd say St. Ballado didn't quite live up to his potential, but he didn't suck. Short career as well.

Yukon is one that never raced. He was a Northern Dancer half brother to Mr. Prospector that sold for 1.4 mil as a yearling. Ended up standing in California in the 80s and sired some pretty nice horses. His best was Candy's Gold.

How about Red Ransom, not that he was a bad horse but only 3 career races with the topper being an allowance race win, turned out to be a gem of a sire.

it goes back a while, but English-bred Alibhai was unraced--he sired Determine, Bardstown, On Trust, Flower Bowl, and Your Host--who in turn sired Kelso.

He was no awful horse. He won his debut at Saratoga in 56 and change for 5furlongs.

He just got hurt before he ever faced stakes horses.

No different than the all-time great stallion Danzig. Danzig only ran 3 times and never won anything more than an alw race.

Danzig was a freak, probably my all time favorite sire.

How about Outflanker? Currently third leading sire in Maryland (after "promotion" from Florida), he never broke his maiden in 10 starts in Europe.

St. Ballado wasn't a BC Classic type horse but I saw him run a few times and he was Grade 2-3 quality. THere's a number of sires who's a$$ he would've kicked on the racetrack.

Danehill was a great sire that was just so so as a racehorse.

Trained by Jeremy Tree, Danehill faced the starter nine times, winning four races and only twice finishing unplaced. As a three-year-old, following a valiant third place in the 2,000 Guineas behind Nashwan and a fourth place in the Irish equivalent, Danehill was switched to shorter distances and developed into a champion sprinter, winning the Cork and Orrery Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Haydock Sprint Cup

Sort of like Ted Williams son having a kid, even though he sucked, was a mooch and then froze his dad's head.

Malibu Moon, by far the least accomplished racehorse on the 2009 General Sires list at #16.

Seeking the Gold, won the Super Derby and Peter Pan...but given his record as a stallion you have to wonder what he did on the track compared to the horses he did produce did not match.

Seeking the Gold was nosed by Forty Niner in both the Haskell and the Travers. In fact the photos of the two races are nearly identical.
