Do you listen to horsey races on the radio?

I want to set the record straight. It seems like a future track manager on here thinks absolutely no one does.

I had to listen to this years Derby in the car, don't ask....Mind you if was Durkin's call which was his worst ever and I hadn't a clue what was going on because of it.

I grew up listening to everything on the radio. I remember listening to sports gathered around the Hallacrafters short wave as a kid in Venezuela.

I still enjoy hearing a race, such as when Steve plays them on ATR. In 2007, I had to drive from FL to Knoxville on BC day and heard the entire broadcast on Sirius and enjoyed it.

As far as conventional radio, I'm not sure where racing is available, but for someone stuck at work, with the ability to listen, it would be a nice option to no racing at all.

I caught the Smarty Jones Belmont on the radio(actually got the signal in the Arizona desert, Dave Johnson call) the Afleet Alex Preakness and alot of Saratoga Races on ATR the past couple years. I'd listen to any race on the radio if it was on.

If there was a service that I could call into from my phone to get a live call I'd use it.

i can't imagine having to listen to a radio stretch call on a race in which i bet on on a regular basis, that would be torture for me. If that was my only option i would just wait until i'm near a comp. and watch the replay

I work during the week and gets tips on occasion that I bet over the phone and would love to have access to a direct line to get a race call. Currently I call up someone who I know is home and have them turn on the OTB channel and put the phone up to the tv so I can hear the race call live.

the old days here in los angeles, bill gar used to call the feature every day. he was a legend but not very good.

He was the best!!!

There is nothing like the experience of having a bet on a race and having him call it for you on the radio.

His calls were just so random it always added a great deal of excitement to the race. I especially loved it when he wouldn't call your horse once in the entire race until the end, when he would call "and so and so gets up for the win!"

I always thought that that must feel something like getting a last minute reprieve from the death penalty.

i agree, i used to listen when we could not get a signal. that was years ago....i'm old enough to remember when OTB up here had to play just audio. no tv live call only. just like you said the close races are torture..i hate counting on the race caller.

I love that Sirius broadcasts TVG and can listen in live while away - now we just need Grunder to call the splits at TBD and I'dnever leave my car

Years ago I was a summer-time lifeguard at a country club pool. One of the other lifeguards and I would make bets before coming to work and one of the local radio stations played the stretch calls of each race throughout the Saratoga season. We had the radio tuned to that station all day long.
