2/15: LRL (All Stakes P4); OP (Southwest); SA (P4)
The Santa Anita double carryover pool swelled to $2,378,000 Sunday, and the very difficult sextet was more than worthwhile to 5 winners who pulled down $313,721 each for negotiating the sequence. It was a murderously hard series of races to attack, with the G2 Santa Maria H. feature highlighting the day and producing the biggest price of the afternoon, the $28.60 Striking Dancer from Ken McPeek. The deep and treacherous event indeed had the anticipated solid pace I looked for, and the top three -- Striking Dancer, 'Super Add' Gripsholm Castle and on top 'Best Value' Floating Heart -- were 6th, 5th and 7th after three-quarters. Pace setters Unrivaled Bell, Miss Silver Brook and Freedom Star were overhauled in the final 500 yards, and finished 4th, 9th and 5th respectively.
A race earlier, Jeff Mullins got his hands back on Leedstheway, whom he had for the gelding early career, and that one aced his first trip down the hill under Tyler Baze to the tune of $21.40. The late P4 came back an enormous $9,281 book-ended by 'Super Add' Sky Mami ($14.40) in the 7th, and 'First off the claim for Melody Conlon' (30%) Champion Ride ($6.80), 'Most Likely' in the 10th. Huge multi-race prices dominated the late part of the day, but I cannot seem to string the right names and numbers together... Hope you did OK. For the holiday today, Laurel has an all-stakes P4 featuring the G2 Gen. George and Barbara Fritchie, Santa Anita the G2 San Vincente and Buena Vista, Oaklawn the G3 Southwest, and there are carryovers available at Gulfstream ($19k), Beulah ($17k) and Golden Gate ($16k). The Fritchie and Southwest LIVE on "At the Races" today, as well as happy recaps with winning connections from the weekend so far!
