Yes, I talked about it in the Pat O' Brien thread. They think DM has a lung infection.

Shouldn't they have checked for that before the race?

No. they don't scope horses before a race.

Exactly! Doesn't mean the horse is through! And no, that sort of thing often goes undetected if it developes right before the race (within a day or so).

all the money I keep scrounging up to gamble is lost

don't they keep that money for you down at the local pawn shop?
here's a tip: don't bet every race, don't bet a horse at bad odds
and the only way to make any money at this game is to find
vulnerabe favorites and play against them in certain "spot plays"
now ask yourself if you have the discipline to do that
if the answer is no, travel south until you see a big red bridge
climb up to the top and hurl yourself off of it
DM I thought wasn't a good bet yesterday, excuse for the lung's ok
but it still don't pay, at the windows

The owners just put up $120,000 to get him in the breeders cup races so I wouldn't think anybody that bet Declans Moon made a bad bet. They still have a chance to get him right and run in the goodwood at Santa Anita before the Breeders Cup.

I don't think there is any chance that DM will run in the Classic. Even if he would have won yesterday, Ron thought that the BC Classic would be too much, too soon. He thought the BC Sprint would be a better spot because at least the horse would be fit enough for the distance.

Now that DM ran poorly and is sick, there is practically no chance that he will run in the Classic. He won't even run again until Oak Tree and he'll probably just run in a 6 1/2 or 7 furlong race. There won't be any time to get him ready to go 1 1/4 miles a month later.

I think he'll be retired soon. Really no need to keep him in training with all of the problems he's had.

As of two days ago, they were expecting this horse to run for the next few years. He's a gelding, so he can run for another 4 years or so. He hasn't really had a lot of problems. He had a chip and he also had another problem that they didn't realize was there. When they brought him back the first time, they couldn't figure out why he wasn't training right. The chip had healed and they expected the horse to be acting great, but he didn't seem like himself. They did some tests and discovered that he had another problem that they didn't know about. When they discovered what it was, they had to turn him out again. The late discovery of the problem probably cost them about 4-5 months. If they knew about it from the start, they would have given him a few more months to let it heal. Instead they brought him back and trained him for a couple months and then had to turn him out again.

Anyway, since he came back the second time, everything has been going great. The horse has looked perfect. They were looking forward to him running for several more years. Assuming that he just has a lung infection, I would expect him to fully recover and to race for several more years.

Thanks rupert!!! Thats great news. I was hoping he wasn't hurt and Im glad you got the scoop on the infection. We need all the stars we can get in this game and we didn't need to lose him so quickly after a nice comeback race.

Or Rockport Harbor.

One good performance in a long awaited race, then retired after the next.

That wasn't what the poster meant. The poster was saying that both Declan's Moon and Afleet Alex had a race where they ran bad due to a lung infection.

Likewise, thank you for the info. On ESPN I thought I heard them say it might be his last race and I thought, "He's a gelding; wha?" But I may have misheard anyway.

Infection or not, Decalns Moon didn't look all that good in the racing form. I guess the infection helped me out because I bet hard against him, did not include him on any exotics or multi race wagers. His numbers were much lower than his rivals, his recency was very suspect, he was beat by a claimer in his only comeback race... He was meeting some legitimate G1-2 rivals for the first time ever. Yes, those 2yo races were pretty fast, but that was 2 years ago...
