I didn't read the article, but I don't see how a guy who's now won three Derbys doesn't make his way to Saratoga.

So if he had won only 2 he doesn't get in?

I mean Johnny V has a total of none and he is a HOF for sure....Maybe a bit too much emphasis on one race here. Not saying he doesn't belong but the Derby is not the only important race.

Realistically, there's the Derby, and then there's everything else...

Johnny V. could win 37 Westchesters, 23 Lake Georges, and 403 Stuyvesants, and it wouldn't match up to Calvin's three Derbys. Like Travis said.

travis is right it's the derby , it's the world series of horse racing , it may only be 1 race , but , it's the most important race every year by leaps and bounds

Shouldn't riding ability count for something....I mean why not just induct every Derby winner and leave everyone else out. That's silly. He needs to belong on his total resume, not simply Derbys.

I don't want Johnny V in the Hall of Fame. He's made a career out of riding those Pletcher juice jobs -- you know, the ones that just keep coming in the stretch-- and giving horses those abusive wide trips. When's the last time he even sniffed the rail? Mike the EUNUCH has more balls than Johnny V.

No EUNUCHS in the Hall. It's written.

Maybe Calvin will get an Eclipse award which just might cement a place in the HOF.

Velazquez has had plenty of chances in the Derby and failed. Meanwhile, Calvin won on freaking Mine that Bird. I don't think anything else really needs to be said.

Besides, are we comparing JV to Calvin, or debating whether Calvin is HOF-worthy? You're basically saying that Warren Moon (JV) should get in the HOF based on a bunch of gaudy numbers before Terry Bradshaw (Calvin) who always won the big one. I think they probably both deserve enshrinement, but Calvin deserves it more.

3 out of 4 derbys is no fluke...he's gotta be a lock at this point. Approaching 5,000 wins too...it's a no brainer.

Mike Kane was the long time communications director of the Hall of Fame. He's very qualified to consider Borel's resume on this topic, and what he lists as the accomplishments to date absolutely place Calvin on the HOF cusp. His career isn't over by a long stretch, so he'll end up with way over 5,000 wins. Fold in these late career heroics on the national stage, and I think you have to acknowledge that Borel is approaching Hall worthiness.

His major stakes wins (Wikipedia)

Breeders' Cup Juvenile (2006)
Kentucky Derby (2007, 2009, 2010)
Preakness Stakes (2009)

Super Derby (1991)
Arkansas Derby (1993)
Count Fleet (1995)
Falls City Handicap (1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2008)

Additionally, he RARELY gets days for careless riding, is well liked amongst the rest of the jockey colony, and is a cult heroic figure here in Kentucky.

I absolutely think he's a Hall of Famer.
