Default Monmouth claiming frenzy

I don't remember seeing 4 or 5 horses claimed out of the same race very often. It happened 4 times today at Monmouth. In the 5 claiming races, 19 horses were claimed. The number of horses claimed from each of those races was 4, 4, 2, 5, and 4.

I see Jason Servis was busy at the claiming box.

This sort of race may have more impact upon the NYRA circuit than some of the maiden/allowance shippers heading over for a race or two. Assuming that the claimed horses are in "jail" in New Jersey for the rest of the Monmouth meet, this claiming activity almost guts the $20K claiming/mid-level starter ranks at Belmont. That condition is unlikely to be refreshed until Saratoga opens.

Any idea Steve as to how many "shakes" were involved. I imagine that several of those horses listed had multiple slips dropped for them. Some of those midlevel claiming horses make up the bread and butter in NY and they may not be back.
It's a bad situation. We're in to late May and by this time of year, I am usually seeing fewer "Inner Track" horses, as a percentage of daily runners at BEL.

Curious about shakes too. Will have Mike Dempsey on later this week.

This is good is a good thing, I have to admit I have really enjoyed the racing from Monmouth thus far this year. In previous years I would barely pay any notice but they are getting some of my money now.
