Default Malibu Moonshine is ok, retired to stud

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...nd-in-new-york

I know several people were worried about him. He'll be going to stud in NY. How's that market looking for him at $3000? I'm happy to hear he's still with us and apparently fine. Maybe some truth to the rumor it was heat stroke.

He's a cool horse, but will people actually pay to breed to him?

Agreed. Can't see it, even at a bargain basement price.

Thanks for the update. Hope he does at least 33% as good as his daddy.

Seems to me that people pay for a lot of things one wouldn't expect in New York. Malibu Moonshine seems more like a PA or MD sire though.

He's earned his way to the stud barn . Or you can pay $40,000 for Malibu Moon . He'll be located in western NY joining Play Nineteen in Pa. as the only sons of Malibu Moon at stud. Personally I have reservations about Malibu Moonshine's 2 Raise A Natives in his pedigree insofar as breeding in more Raise A Natives . Doing so is not a terribly responsible breeding. However much more than that inbreeding has worked for Malibu Moon .

A quick perusal of Malibu Moon's (sire of Malibu Moonshine) progeny indicates Malibu Moon has had success with crossing Mr Prospector / Raise A Native; including Malibu Moonshine, Declan's Moon, Life At Ten, and Devil May Care, Malibu Prayer . That would suggest not repeating that cross again with Malibu Moonshine. Instead , breeders should consider the other crosses which Malibu Moon has succeeded with and which are not present in Malibu Moonshine . For example , crossing Secretariat with Sir Gaylord has worked well for Ah Day and Malibu Mint . A Secretariat inbreed has succeeded. Inbreeding Nashua (broodmare sire of Mr Prospector) has worked for By The Light, Missacity Luke . Inbreeding Gold Digger (Mr Propspector's dam) has worked. Outcrossing has worked to for Malibu Moon , note Moon Catcher .

What was the injury that caused his retirement ?

A brief comment about families . Malibu Moon is from the same family as Secretariat with a nexus at Cinq a Sept 1924 . Malibu Moonshine's family is not as deep as his sire's but his stud fee is not $40k either .
