He also trained and owned horses before getting in the stand where he then spent 20 years.
He was notably married to Grace Kelly's sister, Lizanne.

The 100K stake at PID tonight is named after some no-name slap-dick republican congressman named Karl Boyes who died in 2003.
PID named two of the biggest stakes races of the meet after Republican politicans ... one of them who campaigned to rid the city of horse racing in the 1980's ... and the biggest stake of the PID meet is named for a Southern Golf Tournament. Further, in the press room, for God only knows what reason, they still have a huge ass picture of George W. Bush in a suit and tie - standing behind an American flag. I have been saying for years that I'm going to get a Nancy Pilosi and Barney Frank FATHEAD poster - and slap it on the wall in there when I remember one of these days. |

True - but, at least he was a racing person and not some stooge bible beating local politican who couldn't give a sh!t about racing.

Well, the hell with you then.
Don was a great guy and was still in the stand when I started calling some races at the Pha. Classy old fella, rocked tweed like no other in the late 1990s, and you would rarely, if ever, see him without a hat. Always had a smile and a kind word if I saw him in the hall. He is well-remembered with this race. |

And I love Whistle Pig in this spot. A great story behind this horse...
My buddy's partnership claimed him for $10,000 in his fourth lifetime start on May 27, 2007, he's made 48 starts since, winning 16 races and placing 25 times, earning over $880,000. A win here would make him a ludicrous millionaire. Considering he was actually closing over the shorter trips at speed-favoring Presque Isle, I think he's got a massive shot. |
