Please Retire Funny Cide!!!!!!!!

Common this horse ows you people nothing, and you done broke the horses heart by putting him way over his head month after month. I am tired of seeing this horse get his butt kick in GR 2's & 3's its just not right to make his run anymore. He deserves a nice big pasture to rome free in! He is gonna end up like BLUESTHESTANDARD otherwise. And you guys keep switching jockeys like thats gonna help!

Your right. I think B. Tagg knows where Funny Cide belongs but he has to answer to a number of misguided owners who think Funny Cide is much better than he really is. It's really a shame. By the way. Is Bluesthestandard still running?

His next race is the Empire Classic. $250K, NYBreds, at 9f over the Belmont track. He will be fine there. No need to retire him.

I really don't agree. He isn't unsound, he is simply slower than he used to be. So am I. Therefore it would be smarter to put him in NY bred restricted races where he'll be more comfortable. Once that is done, he'll be fine. He isn't 10, he is a gelding and physically he seems fine. Spotted better. That's all.

He ran well today. Not as good as I had hoped, but he has nothing to be ashamed of. Empire Classic sounds good and the money is right. Then a nice break and back to doing what he loves to do, run.

there's no need to retire the horse. the only thing they're hurting is his reputation, and their egos....racing isn't going to kill him--hell, it's all he knows. but it would be nice to see him in the right spots where he can finish on the lead.

People were bashing the owners/trainer after he didn't win after the Preakness. Then he won the JCGC. Then they bashed some more when he went winless in 2005. Then he won two races this year. Now they are bashing some more. Hell, I'm just glad to see a Derby winner still in training as a 6 year old. Sure he's slower than he was at his best and they've probably made some mistakes spotting him. But overall, he's been a great one to watch.

I agree with your contention if FC still enjoys racing. If he is sour on racing than I think they should do the right thing and give him a nice field to graze in and make him happy. He obviously can still be competitive in lower level events. It's just a matter of convincing the owners of that.

It's easy to read between the lines when B Tagg talks about Funny Cide. On ATRAB he talked about finally having the horses head on straight and wanting to put him in a lower level stake but the owners wanted to enter him in the Pimlico Special. He than went on to talk about how wonderful the Jacksons (Showing Up's owners) are and how they put trust in him to train Showing Up the way he thinks is best. It sounds like a constant battle with FC owners when it comes to where to enter the horse. What a pain in the ass when you're trying to do right for the horse. At this point they should what they think will make FC the happiest. He's earned it.

Funny Cide is a national treasure ...

... and a pleasure to watch on those rare occasions when he's spotted in the right races.

Were it not for the attention-cravers at Sack-O-Kaka ... Funny Cide could have a record of 6 wins and 3 placings in state-bred stakes, allowances, and secondary track G3 stakes.

Those seventh-place anchor droppings are both embarrassing and completely unnecessary ...

... let Funny Cide be Funny Cide.

Bluesthestandard is retired. I believe Kristan Mulhall claimed him and retired him. I'll always respect her for that.

And as i recall, the trainer of Bluesthestandard and the owner were insisting the horse was sound as ever. They were either lying or seriously deluded.

He just earned a check in a G2 race, this isn't comparable to a horse running in low level claimers. The time to retire Funny Cide is when there are no races he has a shot at running top five in outside of the claiming ranks. Until then enjoy the fact that we have a stakes horse that has actually raced 9 times this year.

Why not take him on a barnstorming tour? He's obviously in over his head in Grade 1 races.

Get racing secs. to write a 75-100k stake for him every eight weeks or so and travel to all of the places (GLD, EmD, Ret, Hou, Hoo, etc..) where people would love to come out and see a Derby winner.

Horse racing may actually win over a new fan or two to get to see a Derby winner in the flesh. The local rags will write about it leading up to the race and when he beats 5 or 6 local tomato cans, they can write about his magnificent victory. The clan can pile back into their school buses and go to the next race.

Makes too much sense to me.

HE IS NOT A GRADE I OR II HORSE AND HASN'T BEEN FOR A COUPLE FOR YEARS NOW!!!...The sooner the bus drivers understand that, the sooner they will spot that poor horse where he has a chance...like against state-breds (of course he couldn't beat Commentator or West Virginia either) or ship to Canada for Grade 3, but really listed stakes is where he needs to be...

I'm like who started this, I'm getting to where I feel sorry for the little horse now - and thats saying a lot because he was never a favorite of mine....His rival Empire Maker is getting laid all day these days and selling babies for millions of dollars - while poor Funny is getting his head handed to him by horses he couldn't keep up with if he had a head start....what a shame

I agree with randall here...if the horse is still sound and has his head in the game he doesn't need retirement....he desperately needs a drop in competition though...Tagg is a wonderful trainer who is up against it with those owners. Sackatoga is shameful in their pursuit of glory.

Watching FC race he appears to have lost interest in racing. I hear what your saying about placing him where he can win, but I'm thinking he'll show the same lack of interest in those races. And how low do you go? Will we see him in 40K claimers at some point, or at Mountaineer for $3000? Where's the bottom? When do you say he was a great horse and diserves to spend the rest of his days chillin?

I think it's sooner than many of you think.

I don't have a problem with Funny Cide racing. There are plenty of horses out there that are racing at ages older than Funny Cide. The owners are the ones who are screwing up. I think he needs to be spotted better. I also believe that if he is sound then race him. I would race him if I was the owner. There are plenty of races out there for him that have good purses. However, I do not think it would even be all that competitive in some of them. New York breds are getting better and better each year from the top to the bottom. But good luck to Funny Cide--never was a big fan but as long as he is sound then why not race him.
