thus manages to simultaneously affirm and subvert a cherished bit of patriotic iconography: the returning serviceman being greeted by the one he loves.
i disagree. there is no way that picture can cause the destruction the author foresees. of course it is leonard pitts, so his opinion doesn't surprise. but it is just that, an opinion.

Where is any "foreseeing destruction" by the author? The author pretty much wrote the exact opposite of what you contend:
